The movie Blade Runner by Ridley Scott was groundbreaking in many ways. One was with the dark, dystopian view of a future grounded in Japanese aesthetics. But did you know that this mood was NOT at all what Philip K. Dick intended when he wrote "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"?
Philip K. Dick wrote his amazing novel in 1968. At the time, Philip was sure that the future held a world where the US and Russia were jointly in control of the planet, along with a United Nations. The story is set in the 'future' of 2019.
When Ridley Scott made his movie version, Blade Runner, in 1982, he was convinced that Russia would NOT be powerful by 2019. He pretty much NEVER mentions Russia. Instead, he strongly created an aesthetic which had Japan as a primary contender, even having most of the downtown LA landscape be fully immersed in Japanese language and symbolism.
It's always interesting to see how people think the future is going to play out!
