The start to every traditional Japanese/ Chinese calligraphy session is the hand grinding of the ink stick into the ink stone to create the ink. This is an incredibly meditative and relaxing experience. I highly recommend it. It is an ASMR / Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response experience - the sound of the repetitive grinding is lovely. I have a brief intro narration at the title screen and then the video itself is wholly narration free. You solely hear the gentle sound of the ink stick grinding onto the ink stone to create the ink.
For the technique details: first you add just a little water onto the ink stone. Then you gently grind the ink stick into the water to release the ink from the stick. When the ink mixture starts to feel a bit thick, you let that drain into the well and then start fresh with some more water. You keep doing this until you have enough ink for your current session of painting.
By doing this grinding at the start of each calligraphy session, you allow your mind time to relax into the quiet state and peace which I find supportive of creating calligraphy.
The ink grinding video should help people new to calligraphy to learn how their tools work. This video can also be helpful for any authors writing about a character who enjoys doing this type of calligraphy.
Please ask with any questions, I'm happy to help! If you'd like a video on another aspect of using this kit, just let me know.
