An exchange group from Ozu, Japan is in Hastings this week learning about Nebraska family life and culture.
Teenagers and chaperones from Hastings' sister city in southern Japan spent Monday afternoon making jewelry with local residents. The group has already been to a baseball game and met with the Hastings mayor. A program between Hastings and Ozu has been going on since 1995 and is organized by local residents in the spirit of promoting learning and cultural exchange.
"It was a wonderful opportunity for them to learn a little bit about what this community about the same size as Hastings is like in Southern Japan," said Sharon Brooks, an exchange program coordinator.
"The thing I'm most looking forward to is that Japan and America's food are completely different," said Aoi Takada, one of the exchange students. "The amount and the flavors are also different. American food is what I'm most looking forward to."
"I watched a baseball game. It's very interesting and exciting for me," said Kunito Kawatsu, another exchange student. "I want to learn about American agriculture and American science."
The group will be visiting the state legislature Tuesday, and will be returning to Japan during the first full week of August. #news #nebraska #nebraskasbestnews
