He’s probably not completely wrong about Root Beer tasting like some Japanese muscle pain medicine or pain patches. Root Beer is related to Birch Beer or Sasparilla. Birch Bark and Birch Bark products such as Birch Teas are Natural Analgesics. And are used in a lot of over the counter pain meds. The weird thing about many American Soda’s is they were originally cooked up by Pharamcy’s, and claimed to have medicinal purposes in the 19th century. Coke Cola Syrup was one of these. (The original medicinal ingredient was Cocaine!) Root Beer was a natural painkiller.

@Lunalis

It goes beyond that, though. Traditionally, root beer was flavored with sassafras extract. Whoops, turns out that might cause cancer, so it was banned in the US in 1979. One ingredient that was used to replace the sassafras, especially in cheaper root beers, is wintergreen oil (or methyl salicylate), which is also the active ingredient in a lot of over-the-counter topical pain relievers.

Root beer used to be made from Sassafras root, which comes from the Sassafras tree which is endemic to N. America. Now a-days, they use artificial flavors to get a very similar taste. That's why the can of A&W had wood grain on it.....I'm assuming.

@@operator0 I think it's supposed to be aged in wood barrels? I spent a year in Japan in 1978 and this brought back a lot of memories. Japanese snacks are VERY different from American snacks, things like sugared Anchovies, dried-shredded Squid, for example. Street food can also be deceptive, like teriyaki "Squid on a Stick". It smells great when it's cooking on a barbeque, but eating it is quite another thing. The sauce goes down quickly, then you're left with a "fish-chitterling" that gets bigger the longer you chew it. Not fun. But it's good to see these exchanges between different cultures and learn about our differences and similarities. Everyone should have these kinds of experiences.

I have tried maple cookies. I don't really care for them, but could see how others might. BTW, my fathe died from a heart attack while tapping maple trees. We are pretty sure he knew he was going to die, and just wanted to be doing something he loved when he did so. The really sucky thing was it was my sister's 14th birthday.

Can't believe I missed this one for so long. I remember the vacuum thing from one of Chris's old videos.

We have an antiseptic cream in the UK called ‘Germaline’ which has the exact smell of root beer which made it seem very odd to drink when i first tried it but over the years it has grown on me and i love it now! Thanks for the great content Sharla ! Yourself , chris and natsuki have given me a bearing on my sanity through the pandemic

I haven't seen you laugh this in a video in a while. Poor Natsuki... TWICE he got the cough drop treatment... I feel for the man even though it was funny... lol
