Part 11 of "Japanese History: The Textbook," a historical documentary series based entirely on Japanese-language educational materials. Today, we examine the late Heian Period and the "insei" government of retired emperors! Topics covered include the reforms of Emperor Gosanjō, the era of near-absolute monarchical rule by retired emperors Shirakawa and Toba, the emergence of the sōhei warrior monks, and the rise of Taira no Kiyomori and the Ise Taira (and fall of the Seiwa Minamoto) through the Hōgen and Heiji Disturbances.
