I didn't know it. It does it as you say when I turn the dial all the way to the other end. It works in two different magnifications. It takes focus just at two points on the dial, 30x and 210x. I first meet this kind of lens. Its dial works for forcusing and changing magnification at tha same time. I am much surprised now. I can give knife people a general view of the edge at first and when I find a problem I can magnify it much larger. It's for $100 and works more than expected. Thank you!

I do think as you do. He is a real knife lover and collects only Japanese custom knives. His location is close to Seki city and Takefu city where many custom knife makers are working. He has never said about the price of his knives and I have never asked too. He runs a company and will have money nearly endlessly. He is a kind of supporter of some famous custom knife makers and always go to Seki Knife Show annually to get new knives. He is also the biggest stag handle supplyer to custom makers.

Really interesting to see how Japanese knife design is quite influenced by American design, you can see both Randal and loveless in there. But always with unique variations and mixed with some obviously local designs. Extremely interesting to watch, thank you friend for charing this with us and thanks to you for filming and charing this with us as well!

As a secondary to that, S30V seems to perform MUCH better (in terms of chipping resistance) if the edge is totally mirror polished.

how do you hunt them? shotguns with slug/buckshot? bow hunting? are there permits and is getting one difficult? can foreigners hunt? sorry if this is a lot to ask, but I'm a deer hunter and definitely a "knife person", but I'm moving to Japan this summer and I thought I had to give all of that up.

I have another Mr. Itou's knife from him which has damascus steels for its sides. Its core is R2 which is pretty durable. Its tip took bend a bit and I sent it back to him. He passed it to Mr. Itou at the knife show and Mr. Itou sent it back directly to me after the restoration. Its tip is a bit rounder and much nicer now for the actual deer dressing. His one has a rounder tip too as you can see in this video. My one appears in my video "Deer hunting knives #57". Thanks.

Wako ... Do you own any damascus steel knifes ? If so what is your opion of that steel .. I have 3 and i find it hard to keep a long lasting edge on them ? would you ever consider field testing a damascus steel knife ? I would very much like to see you sharpen that type of steel .. Thanks

The modern 'Damascus' is just another name for "pattern welded steel"; it's a process, not a type of steel. The quality of the damascus will entirely depend on the steels used inside. Japanese damascus will typically have a Aogami or Shirogami center. The old damascus that's actually a type of steel is unavailable as the recipe was lost through time, except for some rare samples in museums, though there is a modern version of it that some makers use. It's referred to nowadays as 'Wootz steel'.

Very interesting sheath, Silver 3, or Thunder Guard, if I heard the name correctly. As with a sheath from a another collection from one of your previous videos, it has the metal reinforcing brackets. This time 2 of the bracket had a small loop for carrying purposes. Very practical. The sheath is boldly thick. The belt loop was recessed. And with the great thickness, the leather is stout enough to lock in the knife when inserted into the sheath. Excellent design.

I always try to do it. But when I have a friend with me, he is always not a good cameraman for me and I kind of hesitate to take his shooting being afraid that he gets nervous about it. I renewed my tripod to a taller one and hope it will help me to take more exciting scenes in my solo hunting. Thanks.

We have overpopulated deer here. There are two reasons. One is we cultivated our lands too much to pasture and still have much forest in mountains. So deer have much food and much land to hide in at the same time. The other is we have few hunters against many deer. It's because of our peace education and our strict gun law. Until 10 years ago we were allowed to shoot only a single stag a day. They were protected. But now we hunt them limitlessly including does. The policy changed completely.

CPM S30V isn't normally a chippy steel when properly heat treated to its preferred HRC of 58-59. Anything harder than that (60+) will make it a chippy steel.
