Hi, I'm considering growing a lime tree in my back yard, so I'll be able to pick my own limes to make Thai dishes with. I was wondering: should I plant kaffir limes or regular limes? Do Thai people use kaffir limes for both the leaves and the juice, or just the leaves? Because if it's just the leaves, I'll go with regular limes, but if you guys use both the leaves and the juice from kaffir limes, that is what I will plant. Thank you for your help.

It’s very rare as we generally don’t use wheat in our cuisine. But it exists as an influence from Chinese vegetarian cuisine.
@LemLTay
6 жыл бұрын
It's found in in places where there are those that adhere to Buddhist / Taoist beliefs. For example in Malaysia, some folks go vegetarian on the 1st and 15th day of the lunar month, so they only eat vegetarian meals and offer up special prayers, incense, offerings etc. To cater to these adherents, there are specialist vegetarian restaurants that produce a whole range of "mock" meat things, that resemble their non-veg counterparts. Once, I offered to take my ex-boss (an Englishman, and a vegetarian) to one of these places, but he was terribly alarmed at the idea of things looking and possibly tasting like meat! He even avoids eating veggie bacon and sausage, so the idea of something resembling chicken drumsticks and roasted meat - made from gluten - would be quite foreign as a concept to him. I'm not vegetarian per se, but going vegetarian as a way of giving one's digestion a rest and having a little bit of canned "mock duck" and a few condiments to accompany plain congee (rice porridge) is a good break after over-indulging in too much rich or spicy food. Just a little context, I live in a suburb in Malacca where there must be quite a lot of strict vegetarians, as restaurants seem to come and go, but the vegetarian ones seem to be well-patronised and are crowded. [Sorry if the reply is long, or mentions things you're already aware of. I'm just trying to give a snippet of a perspective of life in the 'burbs for a local].

5 bucks to ride the ferris wheel in Osaka? That's cheap. The one in Yokohama near my place was like 25 bucks before I moved. Yeah never easy to fight the high prices on food, whether cooking home or eat out it's still expensive. After living in Europe I find deserts in Asia to be plain. All show and no go. But I don't live on desert. Now fruit in Japan is very good just have to pay the price. Now if you want to try something good in Japan is coffee. They import some of the best (and very expensive) the world has to offer.

I just don't understand why everything is so expensive in Japan. A mango that cost $130 dollars is expensive considering these can easily be imported in from the nearby tropical countries. Your meal must have cost you $150/person.
