This single decision makes it impossible for Microsoft to buy a japanese studio because why would you sell to a company that would shut you down even if you make a universally praised game that exceeded all expectations from the CEO's own words. What the fuck Microsoft?

Whatever stable positive relationship the Japanese gaming market had with the U.S. is probably gone for a long while. And if Xbox/Microsoft ever expects to try again in the Japanese market, there's probably no future in that. I dunno, maybe this was revenge of some sort. If Xbox/Microsoft never saw any promise from Japanese gamers buying anything related to Xbox, I guess they'd figure there's no point in owning a studio there anymore.

It's also frustrating because they could have tried to sell tango and it's ips off. Instead they killed the creative output and placed amazing game ips into yet another vault that will never be used. Bullshit.

Bummer this happened. Really confusing on Microsoft's decisions lately. Hope everyone that was affected can find work soon

Hi Fi Rush is AA game, mid priced and modest budget put into it. It is not indie, since it is published by Bethesda.

Hi Fi Rush was the only game from MS I cared about this generation. I don’t understand what they were thinking. They really needed a studio like that, and those types of games. They really need to diversify with unique AA games. Not everything can be AAA Blockbuster if you want to fill up the calendar with releases every year

Having your company bought by Microsoft is a bit like whenever Google announces some new product - you can pretty much bet your house that they'll be shut down within 5 years.

It'll be a bummer that groups that make legit good games like Tango Gameworks get shut down while brainrot slop like Childish Dad/GoAnimate grounded videos, Skibidi Toilet, C*com*lon and The Amazing Digital Circus will continue to get made.

It is very strange when these mega companies like Microsoft or Sony pay lots of money for all these studios only to then close them shortly after, aren’t they losing lots of money? Aren’t the shareholders seeing that? Most importantly are all the jobs lost from the developers themselves. If a company is private they should really think hard about selling out, and if the company is public well, not much you can do there.

Tango Gameworks has not really delivered during the 14 years of its existence to be honest. Mikami has disappointed with the Evil Within games. Kimura has disappointed with Ghostwire. Hero Dice did so badly and shut down in less than half a year. Very little output on the quantity side too, while important people like Nakamura and Mikami keep leaving the studio. Only sad for John Johanas but I have no doubt that he will have another gig soon.

Also Mikami went from Tango which many people forgot and took some people with him. I really like Ghostwire Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush but if u don't have much personal it doesn't make sense i think.

@@Tummamu ??? I'm Googling Top Ten Survivor Horror Games right now to check if you're being truthful. Let's see... 12 websites with Top Horror Games lists, 3 of which has EW1 or EW2 on Top 10, the rest either don't have a EW game or EW doesn't make it to Top 10. 6 rankings videos on KZitem, 2 of which has EW1 or EW2 on Top 10. List of 11+ titles that don't order by rank don't count. Lists with caveat like "on PC", "on Switch" don't count. So that's 5 out of 18. Not only does EW not "always makes lists of Survivor Horror top tens", it doesn't make those lists MOST of the time. Now I don't consider these top lists any sort of authority but you do, and they don't support what you claimed. Since you have made up a falsehood so easily verifiable, I'm gonna make a bet that "EW is beloved in the survival horror community" is another falsehood too. You haven't established a good appearance of truthfulness.

I mean if you don't have much employees and don't buy the Videogames because the studio belongs to MS, then the people don't need to wonder. Also Sony closed some studios too and NOBODY talked about them!! Sony are the Good guys of the Industry? Not for me!

This isn’t about Sony good, Microsoft bad. The point is that for years, Microsoft has been trying to gain some kind of presence in Japan or Asian territories and Tango was their first and only Japanese studio that they’ve acquired through Zenimax. Not that they “need” a Japanese studio but I think this closure would give the perception to other Japanese studios that Microsoft is incapable in partnerships. First Scalebound and now this happens. 😬

@@steboo That is not True MS invested in Studios like Mistwalker too. So it is not the First and only one. And they get good Support now especially through SEGA. Also Sony moved to America too and closed his Sony Japan Studios at all and many more and so much don't talk about it? Yeah maybe it is because Sony is still popular in Japan for some Reason. Maybe they were a Japanese Company from the Beginning, but yeah i think the whole Industry has it is Problems you can not only say that MS is guilty of everything like MANY here do without proof.

@@13Carrey1 Mistwalker was never a first party studio but, point taken that they did invest in that studio for exclusives. Yes, they’re getting good support now but it’s only because they’re footing the bill for those SEGA games. Also, You’re wrong about Sony getting a pass for closing down JAPAN studios though because there has been outcries all over the web regarding the closure. You’re making this subject too much of “What about Sony too?” when this about Microsoft only as a video game publisher. Microsoft gets more scrutiny because they haven’t delivered in first party games in YEARS but that may change now since they’re buying up everything.

@@steboo MS has First Party Titles. Look at Forza, Halo, Hellblade 2, Starfield etc. but How i said: The whole Industry got nuts not only Sony, MS, etc. even Nintendo needs a Deal with Saudi Arabia! I hope they are changing for the better and I think it is better that we ENJOY the Videogames we like no matter on which Plattform show the Developer some Support :) That is all that we can and have to be our Major Priority. It doesn't make sense if we don't enjoy our Hobby as a Gamer!! :)

Historically Sony has not closed studios that _just put out a successful game._ Usually if they close a studio, even if I personally disagree with it, it's because of low performance or output. They closed Pixel Opus, which is sad, but they only made one game. They closed Zipper after Unit13 failed, which it probably wouldn't have if it released on both Vita and PS3 and not Vita-exclusive. They closed London Studio, more than likely as they haven't had a hit in a while. They closed Japan Studio, which we are all still hurt about, due to Sony's own poor marketing which failed Gravity Rush and Knack. Among PS fans, we fear that Media Molecule is next on the proverbial chopping block. Microsoft closed a studio that made a game that earned several awards. Not to mention, it wasn't a studio that they cultivated, but it was an inherited studio through publisher buyout and takeover. Therein lies the difference. At least in Sony's case, they are only closed after they have too many bombs.
