The english intro for Pokemon is "Gotta catch 'em all" and it is pretty much our equivalent of "Mezase, Pokemon Master" and is the most iconic pokemon theme song for us in the west.

In addition to the reasons you've probably seen on here already, part of why Cowboy Bebop is so popular in America comes from how high quality the translations and dub were. The cast captured the spirit of each character, especially Spike, extremely well, and the dialogue both felt natural and fluid. For many anime, the dub suffers as they try to match the mouth movements, but this team did it well.

Since no one has commented on Trigun I will. It aired on adult swim in America back in the 90s and while it is not as famous as cowboy bebop it has a sizable cult following. I think a lot of people in the west like it because it’s heavily Western inspired and contains a lot of Christian themes. It’s primary hook is that the main character is a gun toting badass but also a Christian pacifist so he has to save the day without killing anyone.

I’m from Chile and I can give you and answer why some obscure anime are so popular overseas. Usually anime that weren’t that popular in Japan are cheaper to export. At least in my country, there was a huge market for animation so they brought everything they could (even not realizing that some shows weren’t suitable for kids). For this reason stuff like Gundam Wing are worshipped. If I could mention the biggest shows over here would be DBZ, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, Slam Dunk, Ranma 1/2. There is even this show called Koni-Chan that’s barely known in Japan but here it was super popular because the dubbing (they changed everything to Latino jokes). Sorry for the long post but this is a topic very interesting to me

Yeah, americans have (had?) an habit of changing the openings of some animes. In some other countries the dubbing, sometimes, is from their version. So sometimes we get their openings (like the Pokemon one) and other times we get the original japanese ones. Oh, also some european countries have their own openings to some anime. I'm not european, but i know italians tend to do that a lot. In latinamerica, most of the time (or at least in the 90s) we usually got japanese openings, but we only translated their lyrics.

I think when it comes to broadcasting, Bandai and Sunrise did a good job broadcasting these shows on American cable television. That's why titles like Cowboy Bebop, Gundam, Ghost in the Shell, Silent Mobius, Escaflowne, Outlaw Star, Ronin Warriors, etc... are well known to 80s-90s kids born in the west. These are more adult titles compared to releases like Pokemon, Digimon, that are geared towards children. Since anime is more abundant in Japan, it probably got buried from the tons of circulated content already on Japan Television. All the shows you didn't know, I GREW UP on those shows here in the US.

when Sailor Moon was dubbed to English by the original group DIC Entertainment they redubbed Moonlight Densetsu to a more Super Hero like theme. When Viz took over after DIC closed, they dropped the dubbed opening and defaulted back to the Japanese Moonlight Densetsu theme, and even redubbed the entire 90's original anime. So watching Sailor Moon in English now you get the catchier Miracle Romance hook, since the original DIC dubs are out of print.

The theme song for the Sailor Moon in America had the same melody as the original but redid the lyrics and gave it a faster beat to give it more hype and to match with other superhero female shows at the time like powerpuff girls. Sailor moon was not known to be anime at the time so lots of changes were made to make it seem like American cartoons.

Yeah, 4Kids was known for making their own theme songs to save money, the one for Pokémon here and the one they did for Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters are their pride and joy due to the nostalgia they bring here in the United States, other anime that 4Kids dubbed include One Piece(the most changes in anime history were made there, like Sanji's cigarette became a lollipop, guns were edited or completely removed, death wasn't a thing(a staple of those days), and scenes and episodes were removed), Shaman King, Ultimate Muscle, Kirby Right Back At Ya, Sonic X, and Tokyo Mew Mew, and I think Cardcapture Sakura too.

So I can say Gundam was really popular in the 90s and 00s but I don't think its as popular now. Trigun is a bit of a niche anime now, but I remember reading it in school. Cowboy Bebop is considered one of the best openings ever in the US so most anime fans and will have watched it or at least recognize the opening. I personally liked Gundam Wing but I definitely got into way after Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, and a bunch of other toonami shows. Thing one: In America, a American animation is a cartoon, but a foreign animation is an anime. Americans don't use that word to refer to American-made animations, unless they are Japanese styled. So an animated show from Japan is an anime, and an animated show from China is a Chinese anime. Sailor Moon: I actually met the English Voice Actresses for Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars, and it was a surreal experience, since I had seen the subtitled Japanesw version.. I quickly found out that Usagi is called Serena, instead. I expected something like Bunny, but Serenua is what I got. However, the English VA of Sailor Moon told the following story (2017?): She had been repeatedly begged by a fan she kept in touch with to do tours at conventions, such as Comic-con and Ani-con. Since the anime was like 20 years old, she kept telling the fan that she felt like no one cared about it anymore. He kept pressing until she decided to show up on a whim and was blown away by how alive and wholesome the fan base was, and how excited they were to see her. So now she tours :) On Cowboy Beebop and Trigun: both super popular among men. Trigun is silly as well and has similar vibes to FMA. On Gundam/Evangelion: Mech animes aren't as popular in America, but a lack of knowing Gundan can probably be attributed to Code Geass and our own Transformers cartoons. More recently, you could attribute this to the popularity of Darling in the Franxx, as well. I hope this was helpful!

Interestingly for people of a very specific age group, like 29-34 now Gundam Wing was VERY popular when it came out but the rest of the Gundam series isn't really. Partly because they only started releasing A LOT of amime in the English speaking world in the late 90s/early 00s and the mainline Universal Century Gundam series was pretty old by then and kids found the 70s artstyle outdated and there was so much of it. Wing in particular got huge though because it was a completely separate story so you didn't really need to know about the Gundam lore to get into it. Of course it didn't hurt that it was on American TV right before or after Dragon Ball Z, don't remember which lol.

Where I live (Texas), they showed on tv Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Naruto!, Yu-gi-oh, Digimon, Bayblade? On tv everyday after school. And in the country Mexico, Dragon Ball Z is so popular that they have stores named after Goku or other dragon ball characters. Also, in Mexico, they made these things called "tazos" where they were placed in popular chips like Lay's, Doritos, Ruffles, Cheetos and it had the images of different Pokemons. You could collect all of the tazos and it was really fun. I would always get excited to go to the store and buy some Cheetos or chips like lay just so I can get some of these pokemon tazos and add it to my collection. Those were some good times.

Also, Gundam is probably well known among 30-something guys, Gundam Wing being the most well known. Wing was the first Gundam played in TV here actually! Unfortunately, the more recent series have not been as popular with gen z.

Something you might find interesting, and might want to react to, is while I was watching a video called "Yakuza is Stupid and Beautiful and I Love It" by Super Eyepatch Wolf, he said violence against humans was really taboo in Japan, while violence against monsters, aliens, and robots were okay. So, maybe this is why you don't know about shows like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, cause within the Anime Community, these two are legendary, haha.

Trigun is pretty good, and it would be fun to see you react to an episode. Cowboy Bebop is a masterpiece. One of, if not the, best anime ever created. You NEED to watch it.

I knew all of these and watched most of them except for Neon Genesis Evangelion. Buying whole dvd sets of anime were expensive and I did not see anyone broadcasting it in syndication. At least not to the extent of, say, Dragonball or Sailor Moon. As for some favorites of mine not on this list, I am a big fan of Bubblegum Crisis, Record of Lodoss War, Slayers (the 90s anime..not Demon Slayer or Goblin Slayer), Wolf's Rain, and have been introduced to other anime over the years by my anime-loving wife. Just finished up Darling in the Franxx recently and found the series quite thought provoking.

A big reason why a lotta these kids don't really know a huge chunk of these is because they're a lot younger than you'd expect, with quite a few of these shows only ever airing when they were either not born yet or way too young to remember! Also, Gundam is the best! Can't get enough of Zeta!

At certain points, I kept forgetting that this was for only 90s anime and I kept expecting to hear the intro to either Code Geass or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

Gundam Wing was very popular with people a little older than this, if they were maybe 5 years older they might know it more. I used to watch it ever day after school!
