Oh poor Jared, the sweetie. This kind of reminds me of when I was in Toronto with my friend, we had to get on a train to go back to his collage residence from the mall and I'm from Newfoundland so we don't have train here and I barely know the bus routes so I'm shit with public transportation. Anyways, it was starting to get late so we tried to rush to get on this train and the first thing I obviously asked was "Where do we pay for our tickets?" to which he responds to "Oh no, we don't need to pre-pay, we can do that on the train." and I'm here looking around seeing that everyone is at machines paying for their tickets and I'm getting that gut feeling of 'nopennopenope, Tiffany this is a bad idea you have to pay for the tickets.' but of course I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and trust him that he knew what he was doing and we needed to get back quickly. "...Alright, if you say so. You've done this before on THIS train, right?" "No not on this one, but I've done it a million times on other trains." and the look I gave him was just screaming 'are you fucking kidding me?' "...Are you POSITIVE, 100% SURE this is okay?" "Yes, we're fine!" Anyways we go on the train and when it gets going the workers start going around checking the tickets and EVERYONE has theirs out. Around this time he starts to regret his life choices and start mentally kicking myself for not putting my foot down and forced him not to be lazy and pay for our tickets before we board. When the guy comes around asking us for our ticket my friend is there like "Can we pay for them on the train? All the other one you can." and the mans facial expression just says 'Is this little bitch serious?' he was 700% done "...No. You have to pay before you board." "Oh..." Then the mans says "This is going to be a $100 fine, you need to pay for this at court." Needless to say my heart dropped into my stomach and all I could think was 'fuckfuckfuckfuckFUCK I only have three more days here, do I have pay for this in Toronto or can I do it in Newfoundland?' Another worker comes up to us and takes me aside and asks me some questions of "Whats your name? Where are you from? Is the guy you are with your boyfriend? (to which I answered with a definitive "NO") Where were you heading?" and the other man was asking my friend the same questions just to make sure our answers lined up and what not. When I went back to my seat the first worker handed us a slip of paper and said "I'm going to let you off the hook, you don't need to pay the fine but for the love of god don't let this happen again." I think it goes without saying that I have never been more embarrassed in my life. We then get to our stop we need to take another quick train ride to get to his residence but I refused to get on another train with him so we walked an hour and a half to the bus station, which I knew the system after being on it about twenty times in the past five days. So yea, that was my train adventurers! And I'm going to Europe with this dude in two weeks and I swear to Chuck if something like this happens again if we are over seas............ Actually this wont ever happen again because I wont let it.

I'm from the Netherlands and it sounds like a big deal when the whole train system gets stopped or messed up, but honestly, this happens like at least a few times a week. The railway system is hopelessly planned. About very day we deal with delays, which cause a chain reaction that usually ends in trains falling out. So yeah, they really can't ask people for more than 150 euros xD It's so fun to hear him talking about it, though. I can exactly imagine how it must've happened :)

I can count on one hand the number of times I've had my ticket checked in America and it's only slightly more often in Canada (I take the train in Canada a lot). They don't check them right away anyway, as I said. Jared was clearly freaking out in the first 5-10 minutes of the trip, long before the employees come out of the woodwork. and he was FREAKING OUT as in not thinking rationally at the time.

I had never taken a train before until I went to Europe for the first time (I'm American) so maybe he hadn't. And sometimes those guys are hanging out behind a locked door for a while, when they aren't walking through the train. They disappear sometimes. Plus he panicked. Obviously it didnt stop ALL the trains in Europe, but I imagine all of the trains in and out of Amsterdam, particularly on the route to Germany, (which is alot of trains) for the next few hours were off-schedule/delayed

In America they don't really check the tickets that often and in England (I don't know about the Netherlands) the tickets don't have your name on them AND they don't check them right out of the gate, it takes about 20-30 minute for them to go around.
