In the early 90s, Jagr was a magician with the puck
@siobhanofarrell4646
4 ай бұрын
He was a magician with the puck the whole way through the 90s! People forget just how dominant he was. At the end of Dec ‘99 he was on pace to score 70-80+ goals, rack up 170-180+ points and finish 40+ points ahead of the entire rest of the league in the scoring race, but his record shattering season was trashed thank to a couple of cheap shots by Mike Peca (which forced him to miss 12-15 consecutive games due to a leg injury) and a second cheap shot courtesy of Dan McGillis (who tried to take his damn head off) Jarda missed much of the 2nd half of that season and still won the scoring race, but the media never mentions all of this. They just say “In an era defined by low scoring games Jagr won the scoring race with 96 points”

Love Stevie Y, he was my 2nd favorite player growing up behind Lemieux. But he was a level below Gretzky and Lemieux and thats just saying how good those were. Really only Orr Gretzky and Lemieux have truly just dominated the NHL in a way that they looked liked men vs boys
@theodorebelmont7922
Жыл бұрын
An example is how Lemieux was really the only player in history to realistically have a shot to breaks Gretzkys single season records. And for the late 80s he didn't really have the best support around him. Unfortunately by the time the team caught up to him he was sticking by illness. None the less his return from cancer in 93 and total domination that season is still the greatest highest level of hockey I've ever seen from a individual player

@@theodorebelmont7922 I guess if you are only looking at the modern era I wouldn't entirely disagree with that list, but bringing Orr into the convo automatically requires me (insert smiley) to bring up Gordie Howe (from pre-modern) and of course Nick Lidstrom (modern era). There are 2 factors that makes Wayne Gretzky stand out from the other legends and it has to do with Gretzky size, and his genius vision on the ice to dodge injury for most of his career. This was a gift most other greats did not have like Bobby Orr, Mike Bossy, Mario Lemiuex, etc with their careers cut short, but Gretzky under normal circumstances should have been tossed around like a tennis ball in the rink, but his visual instinct kept him from major injuries. This in itself sets him apart and most other greats just did not have that prowess. #2, I never thought it was fair to compare players that play an entire 80 games or close to 80 games and players that only play half or more than half a season. Most players including Gretzky slow down and get fatigued usually in the last half of the season and their PPG reduces a bit. i never thought it was fair to compare players that play only 2/3 a season like Lemieux and then get injured their body was not in full fatigue factor like Gretzky was and had Gretzky played the exact same amount of games as Lemieux during a season his PPG total would be significantly higher. The fatigue factor makes a huge difference on points total and Lemieux took advantage of that.

Bollocks -The Pens were still coming out of bankruptcy, his salary at that time was massive, when Mario came out of retirement the league basically insisted that he HAD to be paid the minimum salary (if I recall correctly) and following the 2000-2001 season their entire second line - Martin Straka, Alexei Kovalev and Robert Lang were all going to have to be resigned. Jaromír knew the team wasn’t going to be able to improve short term and - most people tend to forget this - over the course of that season he was in the midst of having a bipolar breakdown. Around the time he was traded they even had an article about it, that the Pittsburgh papers & the Pens Organization were being contacted by mental health professionals because you could see quite clearly that Jaromír was imploding. He wanted to do what was best for the team. They couldn’t afford his salary and, even if they could, Jaromír himself had the opinion that in his current position mentally - he couldn’t put up the necessary numbers to justify that salary. But if they traded him, short term they would be able to sign all of their free agents & long term they would be in a better position to draft quality players. Had he stayed the Pens never would have been able to draft Fleury, Malkin or Crosby & they wouldn’t have won those 3 Cups.
