If the RAAF wants to attract more people with out having to spend money, they should just run some F/A-18 training operations over the CBDs of the major cities once a month. Nothing gets people more interested in the Air Force then actually seeing fighter aircraft fly over.

The problem with this is that they can’t really do anything special over major cities because it can damage civilians hearing and more.

I dreamed of joining the RAAF growing up because of seeing the F/A-18, the Ace Combat series of games (developed with the aid of the JASDF) and my Dad's love of military aviation and history. I didn't do well enough to enlist and it saddens me to see the service I love and admire do something as dumb as this. These sorts of videos don't increase female involvement and will likely alienate those who have the passion and love of flying by making them think they're not wanted. That's my two cents though.

How much did this cost us? Wouldn’t a female pilot narrating a video showing how they went from child to pilot be better? Wouldn’t an actual pilot flying the actual aircraft give girls something to actually relate to. Or start with the animation then transition to real life. Because from the looks of things, using an animation over real life footage shows that you couldn’t find a (willing) female pilot to record footage of, which some could think that there aren’t any female pilots ergo girls can’t fly. Cmon RAAF, get your head together. Or hire me, because I’ve clearly got a better idea on how to relate to girls. If you want more women in the Air Force, start going to schools and try to plant the idea of joining the Air Force, or navy, or army there. Bring in equipment, props (maybe even a propeller) people who are good with kids, give them the idea at a young age that maybe joining the defence force is for me.

Chris Huang did that, was at Amberley. Almost 8 months and we didn’t get to see a bloody plane, well if you count the Canberra bomber gate guard then 1. Met 1800 hours and started leaving at 2100. Marched up to the parade ground, then into a classroom for the rest of the time.1 camp. Not exactly peaked my interest in joining the defence force.

_Scooter98_ man that must of sucked, what SQN were you in? I've seen alot of RAAF planes in cadets, Richmond, Williamtown, Wagga, F/A-18's, C-130's, PC-9's, F111's, our SQN, 304SQn has also had lots of visits from the RAAF, bringing along flight sims, as well as gear and games for us to try

Chris Huang In the old buildings break room, there was an ancient PC supposedly with a simulator on it, but I never saw it turned on. I cant remember for the life of me what squadron I was in (Amberley 2012) I heard a few years ago they shuffled things around and renamed some SQNs so who knows. We didn’t have any RAAF personnel come and do a Q&A session, no walks around planes, hangers, maintenance, not even a tour of a heritage centre/museum, certainly no time inflight or time looking at an aircraft from afar, no gear to look at (not even camping gear to show cadets who were looking to buy some for camps). Just a piss poor effort overall, especially considering that it wasnt on a small airbase, it was Amberley. I heard Springfield’s cadets had walkthroughs through C17’s, and I didn’t know Springfield had an airbase. I think when my old man asked one of the LAC’s why they didn’t show us around any aircraft he replied “they’re not interested in that sort of thing.” I mean, why would we. It’s not like we joined the RAAFC over the Army or Navy cadets. I think it might just have something to do with the giant metal sausages with flappy bits that fly instead of the tracked metal boxes or floating tin cans. But I don’t know, just me I guess.

Me.K My primary and high school didn’t have any defence members come in for a day, none of my mates schools had anything either. And these arent small schools either. They’re also in close proximity to Amberley. The only interaction with the defence force I got was a representative for ANZAC Day, and the planes flying overhead. People signed up for the cadets, among other reasons, to get an idea on what life is like in that branch. Out of all the new recruits with me, around a third were girls, and when we were all talking about our reason for joining most girls said something along the lines of “looking for something new/looking to join the Air Force.” The fact that we didn’t see an aircraft and it didn’t gain my interest is very relevant because those same girls had a very similar opinion, and most were probably turned away from joining the RAAF and maybe a similar field. The RAAF had a number of potential female recruits but failed on the opportunity because of the piss poor experience we had. Yes I agree, (it’s also not rocket science but some people will just never know the power of basic knowledge) STEM will always have a male dominance because of how our brains are wired, men like working with things whereas women like working with people. But how Defence is going about it, they could easily get numbers up in probably 2 decades by thinking outside the box. Not this gender recruitment lock shit.

Its official the ADF has lost the plot. This video may attract some people to the armed forces but how many is it turning off ? The social engineering direction the armed forces are going has completely turned me off joining the army reserve .... Wake up ADF !
