We get up at 02:30. At 03:00 “our driver” picks us up at the Jiwa Jawa hotel to take us to the rim of the caldera to experience the sunrise at the Bromo volcano from the highest point.
In the pitch dark we drive through the Sea of Sands and then steeply uphill in a rattling jeep.
Around 03:45 we are at the top and the experienced driver maneuvers the car between about 750 other parked jeeps and stops at the highest level.
He shows us the way: a little further up the path to the right and then another 100 meters to the viewpoint.
In the meantime it has stopped raining gently and we shelter under the awning of one of the tents along the path where two stools are still free. The very small establishment that resembles a rickety beach bar from the fifties is slowly filling up with other tourists who also come to shelter from the rain.
When asked, the sun does not rise until 05:00. So patience.
They wait in silence.
On the other side of the path, about 5 meters away, a man sits meekly on a stool, under the rickety awning of the neighbor's room.
He doesn't look like a man who cares.
After fifteen minutes he gets up languidly and takes a small table from the dark bush next to the structure.
The table appears to be missing one leg. He carefully slides his stool onto the spot of the missing leg.
Then it turns out that the stool is about 8 cm higher than the 3 still intact legs of the table.
He appears to have a solution: the man takes 6 bricks from the same dark bush that, after some measuring and fitting, perfectly solve the instability that has arisen.
The man goes back inside and carefully places a small fan on the edge of the table. Then he places a small iron container filled with charcoal at the other end of the table, plugs in the fan and blows a gentle breeze over the smoldering bits of charcoal.
The rain has now turned into a tropical downpour. The narrow path between the establishments adequately drains the water.
Because his stool has become part of the solution to the problem, he patiently stands and watches without any interest in his actions so far. After watching listlessly for a while, he places a huge cob of corn on the smoldering charcoal. The cob sticks out at least 8 cm on both sides
He does not move or rotate the cob.
Then the realization seems to break through that it won't work out tonight and the man resignedly puts the partly burned basket next to the fire bed on the table and doesn't look back at it.
After another half hour of waiting, it gets light. Not an ideal sunrise: it rains a little less, but the clouds do not clear. There is nothing to see and through the fog we return to our jeep as one of the first tourists. "Our driver" turns the jeep on the extremely narrow road without batting an eyelid.
He carefully steers the car between the jeeps parked on either side and starts the chilling descent and drops us off at the hotel safely after 45 minutes
We take a shower, have breakfast and leave for a 5-hour drive to Kalibaru.
