I would run around with an empty Pringles tube that I had painted blue on my arm pretending to be Megaman.

I'm actually sure that they were making it on the side before actually pitching it to Capcom, which is sort of where the 20 hour work days comes from. It wasn't really work for them, then after pitching it to Capcom, they were like "fine, but make sure it doesn't interfere with your duties." I don't necessarily think it was crunch, more so that Capcom wanted their other projects to be released. And if you have seen Jeremy Parish's video on Mega Man 2, you would see why they would rather be working on Mega Man than what they actually were working on. And the Robot Masters being submitted was probably because they needed publicity, and didn't have the most amount of time to work on designing them. I think they wanted to focus more on the level design, then use the bosses later. And because of that delegation to the fans, they were able to create an amazing game from it.

Megaman 2 is just one of those pieces of art where you can feel the love and passion just emanating from it. While it isn't my favorite in the NES series, I have massive respect for it. Some game series have a specific sequel that just truly defines what the franchise is, and that is Megaman 2. Also, I didn't really take it into account when I was a kid, since the NES was pretty old and I was really young, but WOW it is amazing what kind of graphical tricks they pulled off. I can't think of a game from 1987 or earlier that has anything like the Dragon boss or even the Hot Dog enemies

Yeah, I think that's why it's hard for me to rank it. Because it's so important to the series, but it also feels so different compared to the games that came after it. It's still a VAST improvement over 1, but it still has a bit of that "early Mega Man" feel in its overall design. But yeah the Dragon is a pretty damn impressive boss, visually speaking.

It's amazing how technology has progressed. They worked 20 hour days. Now, Mega Man Maker allows us to rebuild these stages in about a 1/2 hour each. I have used it to make 8 "Metroidvanias", awesome program.

If you're interested in small trivia about these small peculiarities of MM2 : -At the time, and up until the end of the 2000s, a lot of the video game culture in Japan was mostly "for nerds, by nerds, to nerds" or "enthusiasts / maniacs" and other slang japan used at the time("mania" was common as a slang for the hardcore fans). In several issues of arcade magazines, like Gamest or Arcadia, there are several scribbles featured in the fans sections, showcasing the ideas fans would submit to the magazines and the magazines would try to get the companies to aknowledge the fans' wishes, as a community effort. While not many ideas got by since it was mostly for fighting games, a few of those scribbles were from people that are world famous today. While not in the gaming industry, one of them works in other fields : Yusuke Murata, the artist for One Punch Man. He got his start back then, submitting drawings like a fan. Nowadays, it is extremely rare for such a thing to happen again as you said. -The Willy stage themes are kind of an iconic and enduring pop culture "icon" in japanese pop culture to this day in some way. The more famous application of them is from the fan song of the 2000s, "Okkusenman" that uses the ost to make a song about growing up in the 70s and 80s. It was later covered by supergroup JAM Project. Another piece of pop culture is Air Man, his stage and its theme song, prompting other niconico users to make "Air Man Ga Taosenai" or "I can't beat Air Man". I think the ending's meant to be a nod to either Casshern / Casshan / Kasshan or Astro Boy, both of which were pretty influential on the creation of Mega Man. I think it coincides with a scene in Casshan but I'm not sure.

I actually think that the Wily Stages aside from Wily 4 are all very good. The problem with respawning energy, is that it is way too exploitable, and I find grinding energy to be a necessary evil. It is just a fun stage in my opinion and it has one of my favorite Mega Man bosses. Wily 2 is also fun due to the branching pathways, and Wily 3 is a short and sweet level that is a breather before Wily 4. It's just that Wily 4 is very detrimental to the entire castle, that it is a huge flaw. It would be less of a big deal if E-Tanks carried over after game overs, but it's like they designed the Boss Rush stage without even considering the previous stage you just went to.

I'm more of the mindset that, no ability should be 100% required to beat a stage. A better design (in my opinion) would be to have a branching path. If you have the energy to spare, and can take the harder to reach paths, using your abilities, you can be rewarded with lives, e-tanks and/or a shortcut. If you run out of energy before you can take that path, you have a backup path to take that allows you still finish the level, albeit slightly longer and maybe with some more enemies. I genuinely like grinding in games when it's something that I'm CHOOSING to do, but requiring grinding to simply progress isn't respecting the time of your player base. A vast majority of people who run out of energy in these moments aren't going to be like "oh man, I'm having so much fun shooting the same enemies over and over again with their low drop rate of weapon energy" haha. Grinding off of enemies is just as exploitable as just leaving a weapon energy laying around, the only difference is, you don't waste your time hoping for drops that might not even come to begin with.

@@SimplyAJ Honestly, fair enough. I just prefer the stage how it is I guess. The fact that it is designed around maybe running out of energy is what I am commending, and having it like Mega Man 1 would simply just hurt the entire game imo. Although this is my favorite of the NES MM games for sure. I really like the non-linearity with multiple weaknesses, most of the weapons are useful, and I love the level design. I just don't find Mega Man 3 and 4 as great as they are to have a soul. Well that might be a little harsh, but I find that everything in Mega Man 2 just comes together so well to make the best experience of the series. It doesn't have the amazing levels of Mega Man 3's robot master stages or the weapons balancing of Mega Man 4, but as a package there is something about it that stands out as a special game. You see everyone on the Mega Man subreddit claim that this game is overrated or whatever, and I just disagree. Is Mega Man 4 technically a better game than Mega Man 2? Probably from a technical level, but I think that Mega Man 2 is a better game for it's cohesion and passion than Mega Man 4. Although all of the NES Mega Man game are among the best platformers of all time, except maybe Mega Man 5.

I definitely plan to at some point. I'm not entirely sure when though. If you squint real hard, you'll see a boxed copy of it sitting on the shelf behind me haha. But yeah, outside of the "big" NES titles (Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, Castlevania) it's easily my favorite NES game, and one that I'd love to see get the same sort of treatment that say, Blaster Master received.

Yeah Megaman 2 is like Super Mario Bros or the original Zelda where it really doesn’t belong on some ranked list. It’s a base element of its series. Not even perfect, just literally incomparable. Anyway can we get another Game and Watch device with a Megaman collab? I’d buy two.

Hey there thanks for coming by! Yes the channel is still active, and I'm working on getting new videos made, I was just in a slump for a while due to suffering a pretty heavy loss back in March. I'll save you the details, but been doing a lot better and definitely want to get back into making videos again. It's con season now though (PAX West etc) so I'll be in attendance there too! But yeah the channel is still alive, new stuff coming soon (hopefully!)
