Massive thanks once again for the clearest coding tutorials on KZitem. Timestamps from my notes are below in case of use to anyone else: 0:09 What a switch statement does - tests one variable and gives you multiple choices depending on the input 0:20 Starting the example program and why switch statements are better than long if statements 1:30 Starting the switch statement 1:48 Switch body 2:00 Cases and what they mean 2:14 Syntax for cases 2:35 Break in switch statement - exits if condition is met 2:57 Case 2 3:37 Overview of the completed switch statement 4:00 Finish with a default statement 4:45 Test run with age as 3 5:05 What happens if the input doesn't match a case - default is used 6:15 Summary, recap and rationale for switch statements
@wessltov
8 жыл бұрын
I just learned a few things: -You can leave out the default entirely - If you don't use break to end a case, it will run all cases below it until it encounters a break or the end of the switch
@heathbeec
8 жыл бұрын
Right, so you don't actually need the break after the default statement,as you've reached the end of the switch body.

From using all the knowledge from the 1st java tutorial to this 12th, I was able to make a advanced calculator: import java.util.Scanner; public class apples { public static void main(String args[]){ // Declares variables this program will need later on Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in); double fnum, snum, answer; int operation; answer = 0; // Gives user some background info to not worry about not choosing operator before entering two numbers System.out.println("THIS IS AN UPDATED CALCULATOR. YOU WILL CHOOSE YOUR OPERATION AFTER TWO NUMBERS HAVE BEEN ENTERED."); // Skips line System.out.println(""); // Prompts user to enter his two numbers System.out.println("Enter your first number: "); fnum = input.nextDouble(); System.out.println("Enter your second number: "); snum = input.nextDouble(); // Skips line again System.out.println(""); // Prompts user to enter a number from 1-4, depending on what operator he/she is planning on using System.out.println("Choose an operator by typing its number: "); System.out.println("1. Addition"); System.out.println("2. Subtraction"); System.out.println("3. Multiplication"); System.out.println("4. Division"); operation = input.nextInt(); // Chooses operator depending on the number the user entered switch(operation){ case 1: answer = fnum + snum; break; case 2: answer = fnum - snum; break; case 3: answer = fnum * snum; break; case 4: answer = fnum / snum; break; default: System.out.println(""); System.out.println("You chose neither."); break; } // Skips line again System.out.println(""); // Prints out answer. If neither was chosen, user is notified if(operation != 1 && operation != 2 && operation != 3 && operation != 4){ System.out.println("ERROR: Operation can not be identified."); }else{ System.out.println("The answer is " + answer + "."); } } }

Used this in unison with the scanner from ep. 7 to make a primitive branching dialogue! Example: public class apples { public static void main(String args[]){ System.out.println("What's up?"); System.out.println("1. Brag"); System.out.println("2. Whine"); System.out.println("3. Awesome story"); System.out.println("4. Backlash"); Scanner convo = new Scanner(System.in); int choice; choice = convo.nextInt(); switch (choice){ case 1: System.out.println("Cool story bro"); break; case 2: System.out.println("Damn that sucks"); break; case 3: System.out.println("Sick dude"); break; case 4: System.out.println("Fuck you"); break; default: System.out.println("Cool story bro"); break; } } }

@sisiphian

That code really isn't efficient. You shouldn't have to copy paste the same age script for the sake of having something in the switch loop, and you don't have to define a new Scanner every time you want an input. For the scanner, you make one scanner named whatever you want, and put anything and call to the original scanner, Look: What you did: Scanner a = new Scanner(System.in); int apple = a.nextInt(); Scanner b = new Scanner(System.in); int banana = b.nextInt(); What you could do: Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in); int apple = input.nextInt(); int banana = input.nextInt(); You can use the same "input" scanner for anything, for example I could've made banana a String and put input.nextLine(); and I would've been fine. I cleaned up the code a bit, here's the code I wrote: hastebin.com/zakugemunu.cs

Brandon Vaalburg actually if you go this way then you won't be in a loop, you'll be out of the program after every operation. Rather modify your code like this if you may like, in this way you'll stay in the while loop until you press 0 to exit the code: import java.util.Scanner; public class Program { public static void main(String args[]) { Scanner x = new Scanner(System.in); double firstNumber, secondNumber, result; int mode = 1; while(mode != 0) { System.out.println("Enter mode between 1 to 4 for different calculations, enter 0 to exit:"); mode = x.nextInt(); Scanner y = new Scanner(System.in); switch(mode) { case 1: System.out.println("Enter 1st number for addition: " ); firstNumber = y.nextDouble(); System.out.println("Enter 2nd number: "); secondNumber = y.nextDouble(); result = firstNumber + secondNumber; System.out.println(result); break; case 2: System.out.println("Enter 1st number for substraction: " ); firstNumber = y.nextDouble(); System.out.println("Enter 2nd number: "); secondNumber = y.nextDouble(); result = firstNumber - secondNumber; System.out.println(result); break; case 3: System.out.println("Enter 1st number for multiplication: " ); firstNumber = y.nextDouble(); System.out.println("Enter 2nd number: "); secondNumber = y.nextDouble(); result = firstNumber * secondNumber; System.out.println(result); break; case 4: System.out.println("Enter 1st number for division: " ); firstNumber = y.nextDouble(); System.out.println("Enter 2nd number: "); secondNumber = y.nextDouble(); result = firstNumber / secondNumber; System.out.println(result); break; default: if(mode == 0) System.out.println("You've pressed 0, Exiting the program"); else if(mode != 0) System.out.println("Not a valid mode, enter valid mode."); break; } } } }

cases can be characters for example : char age ; age = 'a'; switch(age){ case 'a' : System.out.println("hey") ; } it will print "hey". also every letter has a numeric value on Java , for example if you type : char age ; age = 'A'; switch(age){ case 65 : System.out.println("hey") ; } it will print "hey" because the letter 'A' is equal to number 65 on Java.

Just a little bit of what I've learned from you! Thank you very much and cya you later. Btw, you rock! import java.util.Scanner; public class main { public static void main(String args[]) { int numar1, numar2, rezultat; rezultat = 0; Scanner imput = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.print("Introduceti primul numar: "); numar1 = imput.nextInt(); System.out.print("Introduceti al doilea numar: "); numar2 = imput.nextInt(); System.out.print("Introduceti semnul ecuatiei preferate: "); switch (imput.next()) { case "+": if (numar1 == 5) { rezultat = numar1 + numar2; System.out.println( "This is a simple IF inside a switch command. Good Job! Oh yea, the answer is: " + rezultat); } else { rezultat = numar1 + numar2; System.out.println("Rezultatul ecuatiei este: " + rezultat); } break; case "-": rezultat = numar1 - numar2; System.out.println("Rezultatul ecuatiei este: " + rezultat); break; case "*": rezultat = numar1 * numar2; System.out.println("Rezultatul ecuatiei este: " + rezultat); break; case "/": rezultat = numar1 / numar2; System.out.println("Rezultatul ecuatiei este: " + rezultat); break; default: System.out.println("Ecuatii disponibile: + , - , * , / "); break; } imput.close(); }

Props, man. It's incredibly generous of you to put these coding tutorials out when you don't get much back from it. I've been wanting to code for years, but I never really had a "starting point." I didn't even know which programs to use because it's not laid out as plainly as you have done for us anywhere else I've looked; a problem I'm sure many more have faced. This comprehensive Java tutorial is pure gold. I would urge people who watch and gain something from these videos to donate.

If you're like me and know that Bucky has a lot of long playlists for different programming languages and you're already quite advanced in java and just stopped by this to see the structure of the switch statement because maybe you haven't used it yet. It's basically identical to that of PHP. switch(variable){ case data1: System.out.println("You can do what ever here."); break; case data2: //etc break; } or 2:56

as a beginner, i cannot stress how important it is for me/ others to follow the advice and mess with each new "skill set" bucky gives us, only move on to the next video when you know exactly whats going on with the one you just watched. (P.S. although, every we step we take is a step that makes the last step easier. :))

Those are keywords that tell the compiler about the following method. public means this method can be called upon by any code regardless of parent class. static means the class method can be called directly without an instance of the class first being created and void means the method will not be returning a value when it exits.

public and static are to do with visibility, if a method is public, it can be used by anything in the project (assuming you have created an object of the class containing the public method), static means it can be used by other methods. You can just look these things up

Yes, all you would need to do is import some type of class (such as cs1.keyboard) that allows the user to type in the prompt and then store the typed material into the variable. ex: import cs1.Keyboard; public class simple { public static void main(String []args) { int age; System.out.print("Please enter age: "); age=Keyboard.readInt(); //allows user to type into prompt and press enter when finished System.out.println(age); //prints out variable user entered } }

Use a Scanner to do that, You scan what the user types in the keyboard, and then you put it in a switch statement. For example, the user inputs a int: Scanner userInput= new Scanner(System.in); int intinput= userInput.nextInt(); switch(intinput){ case 1: System.out.println("Value is one"); break; case 2: System.out.println("This is two"); break; } You can copy paste this and try it for yourself, you can add more cases for higher numbers (or lower).

Hi, From using your tutorials I have made a small bit of code asking what your age is and if it one of the cases it will tell you the answer. I think it is quite cool. My code: import java.util.Scanner; class plugin{ public static void main(String args[]){ Scanner radek = new Scanner (System.in); int age; System.out.println("Please enter your age"); age = radek.nextInt(); switch (age){ case 1: System.out.println("Good time to start walking!"); break; case 2: System.out.println("First few clear words!"); break; case 3: System.out.println("Maybe some first sentences!"); break; case 4: System.out.println("May start nursery!"); break; case 5: System.out.println("Will be trouble!"); break; default: System.out.println("Age only goes up to 5"); break; } } }

Declare a new string variable (strMonth), and have a switch statement with intMonth. Have them input a number (for example 1) and use strMonth = "January";. Later on, just use strMonth to display the month.
