In what way does that mitigate the effect of him doing someone elses bit? Robin just did this he was so impulsive with it he would just GO on thoughts, without attention to whether they were memories or ideas. In this case him saying "a friend once told me" suggests he knew he was lifting something, not something he was TOLD, something that was part of someone elses actual ACT. Very big difference in the craft.

Williams referred to "friends of mine" as his lead in, his version was very different in that it started with "if you had one wish", and also used punctuation as the punch line looping back to his earlier joke. Mohr's tail story involves Walken and Mohr working together and Walken noticing Mohr's dog's lack of a tail. Williams tells it as someone asking Walken if he could have anything in the world -- it *sounds* like Williams just heard Mohr's bit at some point and decided to rework it into his own riff. Robin Williams has been accused of this kind of "appropriation" on numerous occasions. It seems that Williams is a favorite of the media -- he always puts on a show for them -- and gets a pass.

The truth is, it is disturbing. You can say "well, Robin didn't claim it happened to him personally ... didn't claim it as his own," but you're ENTIRELY missing the point. These comedians are under a lot of pressure to be funny, even at interviews. It doesn't even matter if the story is true or not true ... the question is, who came up with it ... who invented it ... who wrote it. For one comedian to KNOW that another comedian wrote some bit that he or she uses and relies on as part of his or her comedic repertoire, and then just decides to use it himself or herself is very selfish, arrogant, and dishonest. If Robin Williams and Jay Mohr were on a show, being interviewed, back to back, and Robin went first and used the bit about the alligator tail, are you telling me Jay Mohr could come out and use his dog-tail bit? Of course he couldn't. This illustrates that each time Robin (or any other comedian) steals another's work, he reduces the ability of that comedian to use it again himself or herself, especially when the thief is a better-known comedian. But it is these very anecdotes or jokes or observations or impersonations or whatever else you want to call them that together constitute a comedian's livelihood. It's just plain selfish. It would be different if Robin had credited it to Jay, but he didn't. Frankly, I find it disgusting. For any "comedian" to steal another's work is pathetic and - quite honestly - it entirely reduces my opinion of that person. Having said that, to those comedians who have had work stolen from them I say, move on. File a lawsuit if you need to, to recoup monetary damages, be flattered that another liked your work enough to steal it, and move on. Don't let it make you bitter.

Robin Williams didn’t steal anything. He was just relaying points of reference when it comes to an actor like Christopher Walkin and doing an oppression. And some impressions stand-alone. I mean yeah, in that moment he could’ve dropped Jay’s name by saying “a friend of mine Jay told me a story about an encounter he had with Christopher Walken”. Maybe that might of been a better thing to do. But in the moment Robin Williams is recalling moments on the fly... If Williams did Jay’s whole bit and did not credit him then yea, that is theft. This is a tough one.

Robin was known for stealing bits but this one he clearly says "A friend told me a story once..." Not stealing.

That's about as legit as when Michael Scott wrote on the whiteboard ""you miss 100% of the shots you don't take" - Wayne Gretzky" - Michael Scott. GTFOH. lol

bert even said himself while on Rogan's podcast, while telling a weaker version of the store, he gave it to jay to tell because of Jays Tracy morgan impression

He said this really happened. Maybe Walken fucks with people with the tail tale.

Like Walken wouldn't tell the same story to 2 different people?

Jay's impression is SPOT ON. The only man who can equal it is of course Mr. Kevin Pollack

Plenty of people can do the impression spot on. The point is that apparently Robin told the same Walken story about dog tails as Jay.

Robin says a friend asked Walken those things. Robin had a lot of friends that worked with Chris and he probably heard Jays bit then confused it for a story another friend told him.

+film79 robin did it multiple times , he's a riffer who likes to improvise and those comedians usually end up saying stuff they heard , dennis leary is aanother example .. guys who riff steal that's a rule
