This is an interview of Jay Powell by Sam Sullivan in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2019. Jay is the last remaining speaker of Chinook Wawa in British Columbia who learned the language from aboriginal elders. Sam Sullivan was inspired by Jay to establish the BC Chinook Wawa Revitalization Project and its website BCChinookWawa.ca.
Jay Powell studied archeology and Near Eastern languages and worked at excavation sites in Mexico, Jordan, Egypt, Israel, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Then he studied Archival Science and became a researcher at the New York Times. He then pursued a Master's and PhD in Anthropological Linguistics and taught Linguistics at the University of British Columbia producing 130 publications.
