WOW! Thank you for this SLAP in my face. A reminder that after 56 years of life, it's so refreshing to hear this. Back in the 80's 90's I read every self help book on the market. @@sylwiapro2791 I'll weigh in here, though I want to know their answer as well! I was the same, I've read so many self help books over the last 10+ years, trying to figure out how to be my best self. It was the start of this year that this anxiety really hit me hard, like a crushing weight that made it nearly impossible to move. Once day, I just broke down, and I decided to talk to a therapist, and after one session, her advice was basically, cut out self help for two weeks, and let me know how you feel. Your constant seeking to improve yourself is causing you to feel like you're not enough, and when you do improve, the goal post always shifts ahead, so you're never enough, no matter how hard you try. This was a huge revelation. It was hard at first to cut it out. There were several times where I saw the compulsory urge to look for an answer came up, but I stuck with just writing about the problem, and when I really needed to reference something, I did. But it helped my anxiety massively. I'm about two months in from not consuming self-help content on a daily basis, and I feel so much better! I am more accepting and at peace with who I am currently, and I'm trusting of my own self guidance more now than ever.

I worked for a major media brand during the 2010s Facebook video boom, and Jay Shetty was one of the video creators that Facebook used as a case study when teaching media orgs how to use their new video tools. I feel safe assuming that Facebook was putting a lot of paid promotion behind his videos and page, which would explain the high view counts and low engagement rate. This was also around the same time that Facebook was artificially inflating view counts to encourage brands to go all in on video on the platform itself. Jay Shetty was the perfect creator for them, and I don't know that he'd be where he is today without Facebook's doomed pivot to video.

This is why having relationships with community elders is so important. There are many wise and grounded people in our lives. Spending quality time with people who have lived longer than us, are relective and kind are great teachers. Idolising people we don't know who regurgitate superficial wisdom is not it. Jay and these other 'gurus' have no invested interest in people beyond the money and fame those people bring to them. Communal accountability, integration, and intimacy makes it more likely that someone will have a genuine and authentic interest in bettering your life and thus that they are seeking more in their relationship with you than your adoration, following and money.

HIs recent Rules of Love tour was ridiculous. He is acting like a psychologist but does not have the skills. Jay is crossing the line- opening up deep psychological areas he is far from equipped to deal with. He brought a woman up on stage and asked her to call her estranged brother who has substance abuse issues on stage in front of everyone. She didn't have the number so in front of 3000 people he got her to call her father (to get the number). This is the worst part...he told her NOT to tell her father that she was on stage in front of everyone. Ethically very dangerous. I attended the show with a psychologist and we were so disturbed we all had to leave. If he carries on like this- without the skills he could cause harm, perhaps even suicide. Totally beyond his scope. The whole show was empty but that is another story. Jay has to be very very careful- he is treading on risky areas in general. He is hardly a monk and he is definitely NOT a psychologist. and has moved WAY beyond his capabilities.

A few years ago, I was unemployed and depressed and I spent my last like $50 on a month of his very first genius course. Boy did he hype it up and seemed to have an enormous following with all those millions of views on his videos.. The course was 1 hour a week listening to Jay either live or on replay, access to all his other videos already all over the web for free, and an extremely overpopulated extremely overly positive private facebook group. The first 2 talks were blah stuff about like basic breathing meditation, gratitude, and time management... but then on the 3rd talk he said he wanted to take a long and deep dive into "our relationship to money". I'm sitting there, broke and depressed and he wants to talk about money? Now I'm pissed. Is this a business class or something? Uh, yeah, actually, it most definitely was. Then I did a little math and counted up what he made off of all of us geniuses, and it was hundreds of thousands, something utterly ridiculous for giving 4 one hour blah talks and zero one on one or actual deep work. I definitely felt like a sucker. I didn't have a clue what I was signing up for. Lame.

On his LinkedIn profile at the time he had his degree listed as Bsc Media and Communications from City University London. Since then he has adapted that degree twice to behavioural sciences and management studies. He fraudulently spoke of his degree being from cass business school, I myself attended cass business school which only has 5 courses, and Jay probably took an extra credit module with the business school which is part of City though a separate entity, and has since to this day wrote in his book, podcast etc that he went to Cass Business school, which is a complete lie and just shows his personality disorder that he uses those around him and distorts reality to climb to fame and mis-sell self-help. I just finished reading his book that was gifted to me by a patient of mine and “Think like a monk” should have been titled “Think like a business man” cos that’s what he is. Claiming to be something which you are not is just being deceitful and dishonest. He was never a monk! Sure he trained a couple of summers under a monk but that’s like me going for a couple of driving lessons with an F1 or NASCAR driver and calling myself a race car driver after the fact. Sure, he is intelligent, charismatic, well articulated and shows a consummate flair for picking up on what people want, including high net worth celebrities. And he has repackaged other self-help gurus sayings and published a half-decent book. But a monk he is not. A true monks enlightenment and wisdom looks inward and within one’s mind and soul. You can’t teach someone to be a monk - it’s an enduring way of life and they have to find it on their own inward spiritual journey. You just give them the tools to do so. They speak of profound detachment to not just material things but also to people - that’s why true monks are not jetting around the world in a private jet and making millions. Take it from someone who spent my younger years also studying with monks. Maybe I should write a book too 😂

The first time doubts about Jay Shetty come up was, when I heard about him „stealing“ quotes from other people making them his own without giving credit to the originators. But the final straw came when he started inviting the Kardashian/Jenner sisters one by one to share their „valuable wisdom“ on life. That was like a slap in the face and I unfollowed him. How low can you get trying to make yourself relevant? The seriousness with which he acknowledged each of their pearls of wisdom felt so fake.

I've been in different spiritual communities for about three decades and not only have I never heard him say anything insightful, but he is someone we see over and over again in spiritual communities- an opportunist who doesn't apply what they're learning to their own lives, but who recognizes the gold in what they're learning, and sees it as a shortcut to getting the praise they're craving. They then use it to propel themselves into the spotlight. Not that there is really a spotlight per se in a spiritual community, but they always find one. In other words, this is 100% peddling his image, with no spiritual substance behind him. He's teaching transformation when he hadn't been transformed himself.

So he tagged thousands in posts linking his videos. I used to like Jay. But I don't find him that smart, just a Forest Gump of self-help. That's part of the reason he probably took off, he was willing to so whatever, spam, or twist the truth to get famous and hang out with elite people. But you can't deny his work ethic either. I had no clue who this guy was and wasn't there for him. Immediately, it felt cringy - as Jay Shetty wouldn't shut up - and allow the Dr to speak. Jay just kept on rambling. It felt "wrong."
