It's not about being "hard." Jay wasn't truly the STAR that many others were in hip hop. X, Pac, Snoop, Busta, ODB, Method Man and many others all were naturally more charismatic. As you said, Jay was smart enough to play to his ultimate strength, which was his slick wordplay and ability to balance the street-smart style in both the hardcore and more pop styles...

ip of the day: Get yourself an X 🎵🎤 Love this. A prime example of iron sharpening iron. Jay urges us to thrive by surrounding ourselves with game-elevating individuals, even if they're competitors. Here are my takeaways: 🎯 Takeaway 1: Check your ego. Hov's got ego, no doubt, but he values excellence. Embracing others' superiority and acknowledging room for growth might be tough. We yearn to feel accomplished, but mastery means checking our ego. 🎯 Takeaway 2: Study the greats. Jay Z closely analyzed DMX's showmanship. He shared how DMX captivates the audience from start to finish. People remember peak moments and endings, as research confirms. Learning from DMX's performances can enrich our own craft. 🎯 Takeaway 3: Figure out your own space. Imitation falls short. Jay Z's genius lies in quickly capitalizing on his strengths to stand out. “In my opinion”, he states, "He can't rap better than me. So on that tour there were the most acapellas ever.” Finding uniqueness fuels success. 📣 Call to Action: Get yourself an X - an elevating force propelling you towards excellence. 🎤🚀

And THIS is why Jay-Z blackballed DMX like a sucka when he took over Def Jam! DMX does an interview about Jay blackballing him simply because Jay felt DMX was a threat.

He didn’t blackball him…X was on drugs heavy at the time and was putting out subpar music so they wouldn’t let him put out the trash album that he wanted to put out. Thats good business sense and help preserved x’s legacy.
