Absolutely fantastic lesson as always, Em! For a simple ish jazz rhythm that applies all of the points you raise here, put your right hand on the ride and your left on the snare and play paradiddle diddles with a triplet feel. Hi hat keeping the backbeat just as you said and then get creative with the kick. You won't sound like Joe Morello or Louis Belleson but I can't play jazz to save my life and even I can do this one.

The best hardest deepest thumpiest hardest (again) bass note I ever recorded was when I ended a song with a big hard kick pedal "feather". I didn't know if had a name... I called it "bouncing the mallet off the head" Korn, back in the day, also has a single note in a song called something.. lol. I'll edit the name in if it comes to me lol I'm back... Edit... Ball Tongue... @ Bout 2.30 I think now listening that this is a bass guitar note. But soooo close to the sound ya get hard bouncing the kick mallet off the head. B

Nah, look at the drum groove for "sing sing sing" with gene crupa on the kit. He absolutely uses the kick in his groove. Jazz is such a free type of music that you should never make any definitive rules, because they will always be broken

@heyliim2817

Jazz drummer here, and yes most of the time you would play the ride ostinato. If you see each character as a triplet, it would look like this : 1--2-&3--4-&1, with your high-hat pedal on 2 and 4. This ostinato can also move to the high-hat to give the iconic pink panther theme, and obviously there's a lot of variations you can do. Depending on what you play, you might want to minimize your use of the kick and soften your snare, and if you play the snare on 2 or 4, a little press roll is a good way to change it up sometimes. You can also do some accents with the kick or snare on the last triplet of every time. Those are some beginner tips if you want to learn jazz. Also, there's so much variety in that style of music, from explosive big bands to soft ballads you play with brooms, there's something there for everyone.

Drum princess, Dont understand your bassdrum feathering bit...if the heel down is just carassing the skin how is it to resonate?😅
@heyliim2817
4 ай бұрын
It's more like tapping than caressing. If you hold your kick down to the skin, you actually muffle the sound, just like you do by holding down your stick on a tom. By getting your kick off the skin as soon as possible, you let it vibrate, which causes the resonance

If you don't like listening to jazz, you just haven't found the right type of jazz for you yet. It's so diverse that there's something for litteraly everyone. It's not all just the 60's-70's free jazz. But if you don't like PLAYING jazz... well, you just suck at it
