This is possibly one of the best things ever. I've been trying to find ways to play that more tense/altered way that sounds really cool. I take it you can use the same arpeggio ideas for major or dominant chord vamps, but how about the substitution and scale stuff? For major,are the major scale or Lydian (and arpeggios in those scales) the only options? Cheers. I look forward to getting stuck into this lesson tomorrow morning.
@NickGranville
6 жыл бұрын
Eric Linfoot thanks! To answer your question, no major and Lydian arent the only 2 options on major, they’re just the most useable. If you want more colour try Lydian augmented. Also you mentioned subs - I have a lesson from a while back on pentatonic substitutions sounds like it might be useful. Cheers
@mitsostim07

The arpegios are very helpful to understand the connection between the dorian and the "corresponding" scale.. For example the Em is not actually connected to D dorian, but the E phrygian. But when you play the arpegio of Em (E G B D), is the same as the arpegio of the E phrygian.. And this gives the feeling of playing Em, but your are actually not! Very helpful tips in general, thanks! :)

Me again Nick, sorry 😂 Question re. arpeggios - I’ve never used them for improvising because not sure how to approach, but I need to start. Do you visualise them as the relevant chord shapes, or the specific notes within the relevant scale? Considering them within a scale always seemed weird to me (why not just use the whole scale!) but then chord shapes never translated to usability when playing lead 🤔
@NickGranville
4 жыл бұрын
Tom thanks for the Q. I think of them both ways. They’re quite useful to see within a scale as you can use them as target notes eg note you know will sound good if you finish a phrase on or start from etc. I do visualise them. Some people say we shouldn’t use shapes but that’s a load of BS IMO. Do whatever makes you sound good

When you play are you aware of the name of the note you're playing? Like do you tell yourself "Okay, I'm gonna play G, B, A" etc? Or are you guided more by patterns/arpeggios on the fretboard? It just seems impossible to think so fast that you can go "Okay I gotta hit these notes in this scale".
@NickGranville

Jonas Charif I definitely do think of the Note names when I practise stuff and at that point it’s still shapes. When I play I forget all of that and just follow my ear, and let the music guide me. Hopefully I’ve done enough work by then so it comes out natural. Cheers

@@NickGranville Yes, he is a legend! And an excellent teacher. I know an Aussie and Kiwi are different, but for me it's hard to tell the difference 😉 thanks for the great lesson

Harlan Harvey ha. Nice one. It’s kinda like Canadians and Americans. From similar parts of the world but yet worlds apart in many ways (this is how kiwis and aussies are).

Thong Nguyen Nhat sorry, I don’t follow what your saying? D Dorian and Am natural scale (aeolian) are t the same thing. Same thing with your second example.

This is cool! I want to learn fusion and jazz. I have a good understanding of blues,classic rock ,and country. And do play Fly Me To The Moon,and Stormy Monday. Where is a good place to start? I wish there were chord diagrams here. I really like the way you voiced the chords.

Thanks. I'd suggest if you are starting out in this stuff to get some lessons with a good teacher in your area (or Skype etc, whichever). As they can speed up your process significantly. Aside from that, if you check my facebook page - Nick granville music I think I posted some chord diagrams there a while ago. Otherwise there is plenty on the internet. Cheers

Brian Osbment thanks man. I just checked and the chords I uploaded to my Facebook are for giant steps. I’ll upload more generic chords when I get a moment. Cheers
