In this series of videos I cover Jazz Piano Improvisation techniques. I'll explain, from start to finish, how you can learn to improvise over a jazz song and sound professional.
This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about cycled patterns. This is a great improvisation technique which allows you to build tension.
Cycled patterns involves playing any pattern and then moving up the keys by a fixed interval and repeating that same pattern. This lets you move outside of the scale, thus creating tension, and then slide back inside the scale to resolve the tension.
It's kind of like playing a real sequence, but you don't think about it in terms of keys or scales or chord, but simply in terms of patterns. Thinking about music in this way makes all notes equal and lets you play almost literally anything over any chord progression.
