When improvising, an alternative to change running or playing scales is triad pairing. This is where you take two triads and play them in an alternating pattern, possibly changing direction as you work your way round the horn. Experiment with different combinations of major, minor, diminished and augmented triads to see which ones work together the best for you and think about how they might fit in different harmonic contexts. You’ll find the pairs are interchangeable so that once you learn the shapes and get your fingers round them you’ll be able to deploy them over different chords.
