Trent actually created that drum solo as a loop with old analogue drum machines with the intention of it being nearly impossible to play. This song came out in 1997, they have only started playing it regularly live since Ilan joined the band.

Reznor always refused to play it live too. When he released Year Zero in 2007, they gave a "invitation only" performance as part of the ARG that surrounded the album. The fans were expecting something would happen during the gig, since they were given a playlist and The Perfect Drug was on it. And indeed, just before they played it, armored forces arrived to "arrest" the band.

Trent Reznor now does scores for movies and TV also but when he started he played all instruments on albums(like Prince and Ian Anderson) I think he cleaned a studio at night and they let him use it to record. Super creative genius. Ringfinger is an earworm that's been buzzing a long time in my head. That and tinitus

Ilan Rubin was a a prodigy of Travis Barker…..but his main influences is Stewart Copeland of The Police. Having seen NIN on every UK tour since the legendary Self Destruct tour , I was somewhat unsure of whether Ilan Rubin would fit in to the line up. Then in 2009, I attended the Wave Goodbye tour at the O2 Arena in London (I even crop up in the two live videos they shot at the show) & I was blown away by Rubin’s drumming. Not only is he the youngest inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; from when NIN got inducted, he has now their longest serving drummer. I remember watch an interview before the Tension tour started & Trent sent Ilan for cello lessons, just so that he could play it during ‘Something I Could Never Have’. My line up for top NIN drummers is 1: Ilan Rubin 2: Jerome Dillon 3: Chris Vrenna 4: Josh Freese 5: Alex Carapetis 6: Jeff Ward

I've seen all the iterations of NIN, but IMO Trent finding Ilan Rubin was his greatest talent discovery. He is STAR. Trent never played this song live, he said he couldn't get to to sound right in rehearsals and then Ilan comes along, and he plays that drum solo, he is singing and then he ends the song playing the piano outra. Are you kidding me?? LOL

Love the channel, David. Your joy and enthusiasm for music is absolutely infectious, and that's truly what it's all about. I've been a NIN fan since 1990, and will say this- if a musician were to do a deep dive into an industrial styled band, NIN would be the one, I think. I don't know if you'd enjoy Skinny Puppy or other industrial bands, as a lot of those bands are really noisy and not very musical, but I do believe you'll enjoy NIN. They're really unique, and like you said, they just continue to evolve artistically. I was lucky enough to see NIN last September for their belated Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show with Ministry and Nitzer Ebb. They were really, really good, very tight- just put on a fantastic show, better than ever IMO. One thing that's made me more of a fan than ever is Trent's evolution as a person. In the 1990's, I always loved the music, but at a show in 1994, I saw Trent abuse one of his bandmates on stage (kicked Danny Lohner from behind into the keyboard in front of him), which horrified me. I realize this is angry music, but there's a big difference between the catharsis of that and just being a jerk, and Trent crossed it in my book. Nowadays, he's more reflective, a good interview, gives credit to others, more collaborative, and is more humble. He cleaned up his act (and his life). Good for him! To sum up NIN, I love a quote from a Q and A from last year's show, which had band members past and present- Richard Patrick (who later started Filter) recalled Trent's instructions when Richard was trying to learn a song on guitar- "Richard- it's not D - E. It's F$#K - YOU." Love that!

dude. you gotta dive in.. I HEAVILY recommend the rehearsal session videos from 2008. "letting you" is a good start. josh freese on drums and Justin meldal-johnsen on bass as well as the imminent mr's finck and cortini. its a very tight and aggressive lineup. Trent is like Kubrick with the amount of detail and work that goes into NIN as an entity, but especially the live performance. and the musicians are athletes and geniuses. they have to know close to 70 songs that change order every night, each song with its own different instrumentation and stage design piece. its unreal and I'm jealous of Trents drive. NIN is not a band, its an Armed Force

other recommendations if ur interested- the video 'Tension 2013 Pt.1' gives you a fair idea of what goes into the whole production. its part of a longer doc if u have the time,, a funny vid is Robin Finck's Rig Rundown episode. he's just so in the zone of the production to try and talk about each one of his 30 or so guitars, nothing special abt the guitars, they're just set up differently for each song. he's exhaustedly gracious about it. its a long one,, they also have a lot of well produced concert vids on their channel,,

Ilan Rubin is so good. Not only is he a great drummer/instrumentalist (he learnt cello for one NIN song), but he’s got great stage presence. But what interesting is that he was one of the few drummers that Trent actually accepted, because not only does do the players need to play instruments, but they need to really accomplished with synths/tech, which really limits the talent pool…like another member, allesandro cortini is recognised as a master of synths, cabling, electronics, but just happens to play bass, sax, and whatever other random instrument Trent throws at them. But definitely dive into some more composition - there’s another KZitemr, Ixi, who has analysed various tracks as a classical pianist, and she’s always blown away by Trent’s classical knowledge.

Ilan Rubin is a STAR from the moment he joined this band when he was young Trent saw it, he isnt letting him go anywhere. Trent would t even perform this song live until Ilan who pulled it off.
