Finally a tutorial that suits an existing pianist who is trying to learn more about jazz! I've learnt scale techniques that have never been taught in classical and if I had know then, I would have aced my scales! Thanks Bill, you've brought my inspiration back to piano.

Great video. I'm a music major, and have spent a good amount of time on the piano, usually reading from lead sheets or improvising on a chord progression. I usually don't get into much of a "flow" though. I spent a couple hours improvising on the blues scale in the last video though, and just got so into it that I couldn't stop lol. It's a good reminder to have that theory is important, but that having fun is the quintessential element of music, and theory/structure is descriptive, not prescriptive! Good stuff.

Thanks Hunter - pleased to hear I've been able to help you! Yep, I completely agree: theory is immensely useful (and essential if you're studying Music in college, obvs) but the way to learn the keyboard skills you need is to get absorbed in it, which means you have to enjoy it at least at some level.

Thanks Taylor! It's players like you that I first started this channel for, back in 2009. These days I also get a lot of interest from beginners, but I always have classical players who want to learn improvisation in the back of my mind. You'll have a massive advantage in terms of finger control, expression, fluency and so on, so make the most of it: you'll probably find that playing classical and jazz stuff side-by-side increases your skill at both.

I started these beginners jazz tutorials out of curiosity and found myself playing jazz in the first 2 tutorials:))) I wasn't expecting that to be that easy. I can play basic blues on guitar (pentatonics and adding the blue note) that's all the experience I had with this. Your style of teaching is the most effective for my way of learning I have ever seen. You can have a lot of fun from the beginning with such lessons. This 3rd one was amazing as well, it got only a little bit too advanced when you got out of the announced scale in the improvisation. I understood why it sounded good but it was a little bit too much for me being new to these scales on piano and not having memorized the visual patterns yet. Keep up the great work

I'm glad they've helped you make progress! You'll probably find that if you keep practising the material from the earlier tutorials the later stuff gradually becomes more accessible to you. The learning curve does get steeper in the last couple of tutorials - the best way to deal with it is to make sure the fundamentals are really instinctive, which will take a little while for anyone. Good luck!

Yes, I agree with you carlotapuig! Bill's tutorials are how piano teaching in general should be! Major scales are explained best by splitting them into tetrachords. This makes them two equal parts - easier to memorize for beginners - and later explaining the circle of fifths also becomes easier by just combining the neighbouring tetrachords. Teaching (classical) piano by myself, but your tutorials are a great source for learning/playing jazz, blues, cocktail, barpiano etc. Thank you for all of that!

No clue if you will see this or not. But I do have a question regarding your improv. You teach us about the c major pentatonic and the c blues scale which is what you use in your improv. BUT for the left hand your using fminor chords. I would of thought you would use the c major chords to go with the scales. Can you explain how you can use the key of f in the left hand and the key of c in the right? Your tutorials are amazing.
@BillHilton
6 жыл бұрын
I always see questions eventually, Philip - it just takes me a while to get around to them sometimes! OK, so when it comes to the scales you use in the right it's almost always a case of looking at the wider context of key: if the overall key is C major most of the time you'll use C major scales (of whatever type) for the improvisation, irrespective of what chord is underneath. That's a very broad generalisation with lots of exceptions, but it's a good way of thinking about the big picture, as it were.

hey Bill, beginner here, and I want to ask you a really quick question. was it the "extended" c minor scale you were using on the right hand at 10:50~ ?
@BillHilton
3 жыл бұрын
...good question! The key is F major, and the basic flavour is F pentatonic, but I'm borrowing things from regular F major (eg, the Bb), plus one or two "classic" blue notes from the blues scale (Eb and Ab), plus the flat sixth (Db). I'm avoiding really crunch blue notes like the flat fifth (Cb/B natural) and I'm mostly using the non-pentatonic notes as passing notes rather than lingering on them, which creates an overall brighter, more "major" sound. So you could think of it as an extended pentatonic (careful Googling that, though: "extended" in the context of scales is a term guitarists use). Does that help?

Hey Bill, how do you reckon I should go about learning scales? Should i just practice the fingering everyday and also learn the corresponding blues scale/pentatonic or should I just play around with one scale, everyday for a week. I'm really interested in learning jazz piano but I really lack the fundamentals and I'm not entirely sure how to learn them. Thanks.
@BillHilton
6 жыл бұрын
Exactly how you do is actually less important than being methodical - as long as you have a strategy and stick to it consistently, you should be fine. Personally, I'd start with a small group of scales (say, C, G and D major, A and E minor, plus maybe a couple of jazz ones) and work on those everyday for a few weeks before gradually adding to the list - that's the standard way piano students are taught to approach it, and it seems to work. Remember that playing with evenness and precision is more important than going fast or learning lots of new scales quickly; also bear in mind that fingering for the pentatonic and jazz scales can be far more flexible than for the regular major and minor scales. Let me know how you get on!

@BillHilton
3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, Paul! Yes, that scale isn't going to sound perfect - in fact, it'll be a bit crunchy in places! The idea is to give a framework that you can use to take a bit further, one that includes lots of the different options open to you. It's also a good way of practising using your ears, trying to identify and anticipate potential problems. I do these things for a reason, even if it sometimes seems slightly sadistic!

@@BillHilton thank you for your quick answer! So basically you mean that it's just something to try with. And if I like a certain note I can leave it in, and if not, i can just leave it out, right ? Thank you so much !

I think at the end part of this video you are playing the C extended blues scale over the F progression in your left hand. But you never said why that works? Forgive me if I said something wrong. I kept waiting to hear you talk about the right hand but you never did. Over the C progression you did. Or are you playing an extended blues pattern in F with the right hand?

You've not said anything wrong! Basically, when it comes to what notes or scale you can use to improvise in the right at any one time, you'll find it's much more useful to think of the song's overall tonality (i.e., key) than the individual chords. So, for example, you can improvise on a C scale over any (diatonic, i.e. naturally occuring) chord in the key of C major, though you need to exercise slight care with some note/chord combinations. In general, though, focus on key rather than chord. And above all, listen to what sounds right rather than focussing on which notes you're "supposed" to play. Does that help?
