Another common resolution is the original major so it would be like this: C, Caug, C I often use this and some uncommon resolutions. Basically what I define as a resolution is a chord where at least 1 note is a half step up or down from the augmented chord.

I've noticed that in jazz charts the triadic augmented chord is rarely indicated (although it used to be, in older jazz). The usual chord now seems to be 7#5, which adds the b7 to the triad. The 7#5 is then used in a variety of ways, but it's not clear to me whether it's analysed in harmony mainly as a variant dominant chord, or has other possible functions. For example, in the resolution you quote from Caug to Am, it looks as though Caug could be a rootless Am7, which would make it tonic harmony in this context. I've also seen the 7#5 progress to a M7 with root a semitone above. What do you think?

I've always feared the augmented chord the most. And you're right when you say that its the most neglected (even more than the diminished chords). This video opened my eyes(or rather ears!) Thanks for your simplicity and clarity which threw light on the subject. Further I would like to add: You can also resolve the C aug to E or C# min or Fmin or G#. These resolutions can be very useful especially when you're trying to modulate your song to another scale. Cheers! Keep up the good work :-)

In your example, i see that c augmented before F is like an alternative from E7.. it's familiar like this prog : C - E7 - F.. in some other context, augmented can be alternative to IV minor, example, prog D - Gm can use D augmented to change that Gm so the prog become D - Daug

While you improv, you play Caug(as you mention that on the screen) in its second inversion with your right hand, and hold down Ab key with your left hand, shouldn't it be Ab aug? Question: you told us about how an aug chord from a root resolves to 5 semitones above the root and 3 semitones below the root. How about other possible scenarios in Jazz where an augmented chord isn't preceded by a root? For example, you did a Dm then F aug before going to F. What's the theory behind it? Another question: You also told us that usually, you can substitute other notes of the whole tone scale when playing the augmented chord. What are those exceptions from that rule in which you can't use other notes of the whole tone scale and incorporate it with the aug chord?

I find your videos useful and beneficial however I think you should include or all together use scale degrees instead of counting semi tones...like saying that the augmented chords leads to the 4th....musicians think in terms of 3rds and 5ths etc...not semi tones...I think you're probably just trying to break it down as basically as possible for the beginner beginner so maybe a compromise would be to say something like this augmented chord leads into the 4th which is 5 semi tones above the root ;) But like I said I really think you make great videos!!! Thank you!

I think for augmented and diminished chords it makes sense, due to the semitones being even in every inversion

@spirallove5946

semi-tones actually make more sense to me than scale degrees/letters, because depending on what scale/mode you are in, different scale degrees will be spaced apart differently. like for example a fourth from C would be F, which is 5 semitones away (perfect fourth interval), but a fourth from F would be B, which is 6 semitones away (tritone interval). using semi-tones makes it very clear exactly what interval we are talking about regardless of what scale/mode we are in.

@yellimusic
4 жыл бұрын
@@spirallove5946 the definition (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_fourth) of Perfect Fourth is 5 semitones, so P4 above F will be Bb. Perfect fourth interval is the same in all keys. Also, the 4th scale degree is also always a P4 above the root (given ionion/major mode).

Hi! Great video. Are there such things as Minor augmented chords? Or do you simply go up one half step for every minor chord on the third note of the triad each time? Thanks.
@MangoldProject

Not that I'm aware of. It wouldn't make a lot of sense, either. Play a Cm, then augment the 5th. You'd get the note C+Eb+Ab, which is just an Ab major triad - doesn't have that augmented sound quality. But maybe there are and I just never heard of them!

You know how I like to think of augmented chords? Here is how I like to construct them: C augmented: C-E-G# C# augmented: C#-E#-G## (G## is the same as A) D augmented: D-F#-A# Eb augmented: Eb-G-B E augmented: E-G#-B# (B# is the same as C) F augmented: F-A-C# F# augmented: F#-A#-C## (C## is the same as D) G augmented: G-B-D# Ab augmented: Ab-C-E A augmented: A-C#-E# (E# is the same as F) Bb augmented: Bb-D-F# B augmented: B-D#-F## (F## is the same as G)

I'm wondering because this tutorial is in a major key but what about when in minor key?

seems that if you want to use this chord/sound you almost have to build your progression entirely around it, can't just put it anywhere you want like you might with a diminished chord. it's very jazzy/subtle sounding with an air of atonality, which seems to make it difficult to incorporate into a strongly tonal progression. i wonder if there is a way to use it other than as the foundational basis of a progression or as a dominant function
