When I was a young lion 😉 , I confess (sadly) I was on both on the giving and recieving side of this! I was sometimes accused of rushing or I was very upset at my drummer for not keeping good time. And one can't expect a drummer to fix his internal clock on a gig. It's a bad feeling in a band when you or a bandmate is not keeping good time. Musicians can be harsh if someone is speeding or dragging. So, if this sounds a bit familiar (no need to come out on this), you must fix it. It's something you must deeply commit to work on. I was listening to Jazz FM 91radio the other day, and heard a recording and commented to Nancy, "I'm very surprised they released that". Exactly for the reason, the musician(s) maybe didn't realize how much they lacked in this area. I mean, good for them they had the hutzpah to release it. But, a tthe same time, they are getting judged on that. I really can't say enough, this is one of the biggest muscles a jazz musician must develop. So, I leave thes exercises with you. Enjoy!! Let me know if it helps. - Paul

Thanks for this guide! I’ve been looking for some exercises to add variety to the rhythms in my head. I think I’ll start with quarter and eighth notes before layering in triplets.

A great subject to focus the mind. I speed up ALL the time! Made worse when nervous or playing something I’m not really sure of which is kind of counter intuitive. I get by by constantly resetting when listening to the drum or bass players but on solo piano I’m quite useless no matter how many times I tell myself to slow down. I’m a very poor reader but I’m going to make a point of trying out these exercises- I may be a while. Once again though thanks for the reminder to work on something that is of such basic importance. Trying to relax when playing is so difficult.

Excellent exercisers! Thank you for sharing this video on such an essential topic. Just for fun: "Are you dragging or are you rushing?" (famous quote from film "Whiplash", J.K. Simon as Terence Fletcher, "the" jazz teacher)...🤣😆
