I showed this to a friend and he wanted to know what movie set it was shot on. When I told him it was the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, he was dumbstruck. He, Like most Americans, could not conceive of a single palace complex the size of a small city. Since then he's been reading voraciously about Louis XIV and the "Grand Siecle"

SORRY BUT YOU ARE MISTAKEN, VERSAILLES WAS TOTALLY RESTORED AFTER WW2 BY AMERICAN COLLECTION OF MONEY AND STUDY FOR THE RESTORATION OF VERSAILLES. EUROPEANS ARE OFTEN BLASE OF SEEING ALL THOSE OLD BUILDINGS. AND THEY TEAR THEM DOWN TO PUT IN POST MODERN CRAP.
@andreafalconiero9089

Evidence? Your claim sounds like complete nonsense to me. The palace of Versailles wasn't bombed by either the Germans or the Allies, so why would the Americans have had to "totally restore" a palace that wasn't damaged? The district of Versailles was heavily bombed however, and *not* by the Germans: www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=830546 "Even the world-famous Versailles, in the western suburbs, was bombed by the Allies. In the bombing raid of June 24, 1944, more than 250 people were killed and 400 people injured... No bomb fell on the Castle of Versailles."
