I remember when I was a kid an uncle explaining the "laser harp" to my dad and me, watching this on TV. My uncle was like "can you believe it? It's a freaking laser harp, for me the laser was science fiction and this guy has an actual laser harp to make music! The future is today". Year 1987 or so

Yes. Playback from A to Z. But who cares! It is so spectacular. I remember watching it on TV. Pope John Paul was part of the show. Hebopened the concert by saying « bonne nuit ! » 😊

Being a huge JMJ fan, I've actually spoken to some of his old technicians and roadies who were responsible for setting up the equipment for his old live performances. These early laser harps were incredibly deceptive. The notes of the song were programmed into a computer connected to a synth, and blocking the laser beam WOULD trigger a note however you could play the whole song by just 'plucking' the same laser beam over and over again. Having each beam trigger it's own note wasn't possible technically at the time if I remember what I was told (or it was possible but way to complicated and expensive to justify for a one off). However just hitting one beam for three minutes isn't that exciting visually so he pretended like each 'string' represented a different note. It wasn't mimed from a technical perspective, but the laser harp back then didn't work like people thought it did so it was incredibly deceptive. As I was told, you could play the entire song by just hitting the same beam over and over again. it was fascinating talking to his old road crew (through Facebook I might add), learning about little inside information about Lyon and Docklands was amazing. I was told that during the political problems of Destination Docklands, all of the crew were forcibly ejected and locked out of the site by the police (on the order of Newham council) until a resolution could be found. I was also told that these mega concerts were a mix of playback and live performance. It typically was a backing track of the chords, sequenced notes and other things impossible for a human to play accurately set against live elements like the main melody, drums, choir and other instruments. It was around 50/50 for most songs during a set (though other, more complicated songs were mainly playback. Revolutions was virtually all playback apart from the drums). These old VHS recordings are heavily edited and sound nothing like what they did on the night. If you listen to the radio broadcast of this concert for example, you'll hear that it's totally different and can hear what parts are being played live (such as the synth solos, choir and brass section...). The same thing with Docklands, you can hear a noticeable difference between the radio broadcast and the VHS release/live album.

@@KatieCooper1990 Yes. Never mind the little trick behind the harp. It was so magic and spectacular. What a showman!!! I still listen to his albums oxygen, rendez-vous and zoolook. My favourite. ( I still know the zoolook « lyrics » by heart 30 years after buying the album 😂)
