This symphony for me is total perfection. It is not very long, but during its timespan it takes you on a remarkable musical, and emotional journey. From the rising C major scale at the beginning to the serene ending with echoes of earlier music the music forms an unbroken arch. The incredible harmonies, marvellous transitions, and the way the musical conversation is passed seamlessly from one “choir” to another is masterful. Rather like a conversation between people in agreement where each person complements, and enhances what the previous person said. Having created this perfect masterpiece it is perhaps small wonder that Sibelius struggled for nearly 30 years to complete his Eighth symphony before finally consigning it to the flames at Ainola. The serene ending of the Seventh, and the serene final harmonies of Tapiola taken together both form a fitting epitaph for the genius that was Jean Sibelius.

No dude. He barely got through any of the 8th. You can find it's performance here on KZitem, though.. And, what he did finish Finnish is spectacular--and I would highly recommend a listen. But the work, unfortunately, is nothing beyond a few sketchy pages of score.

Not sure what you mean re it's length? I was thinking more of people in general not knowing it - for example it's unlikely to be broadcast on popular classical radio (in the day time at least) - I have never heard it on Classic FM (UK) during the day. I find that very sad.

what would the clash royale king say about Sibelius 7
Error in the score in the timpani part sixth bar after G (page 15 at 8:40): the third note d should be an e instead (in the manner of the similar sequence on page 18). Sibelius had no "on the fly" retunings.

Noteworthy is the first ms. The basses are on their lonesome an 8ba from the rest of the strings. Not doubling the basses was Sibelius' way of handling such low and thick textures. If he had doubled that lower line, the result would have made the low bass line more prominent, and the lower textures way too thick. Another way to handle the situation would have been to use a contra bssn. and tuba rather than the basses. This probably would have been a cleaner sound, strings vs. wind instruments, but his orchestration does not include the c. bssn.

One small critique. Having two sets of advertisements interrupting the flow of the music is really insensitive and disrespectful. I will continue to listen to this masterpiece multiple times, but not here. While I appreciate the work of synchronising the music with the score, the jarring impact of the crass adverts is unbearable. Please show the music more respect. Adverts at the beginning, and the end if you must…but NOT mid flow please.
