Jedburgh is an historic royal burgh in the Scottish borders. A minister church was set up near the banks of the Jed water around AD830. When Prince David of Cumbria became King of Scotland in 1121, he started a foundation of St. Augustine cannons to replace the earlier church, and Jedburgh became a priory.
Around 1139, the priory was raised to the status of monastery then, in 1149, Kind David made it a fully fledged abbey dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Kind David died in 1153, and all the patronage and privileges were passed over to his grandsons Malcolm IV of Scotland and William I of Scotland.
The nave and choir were built in the 13th century and finished before the wedding of Alexander III of Scotland to Yolande, daughter of the Comte de Dreux. The great abbey contained the best of both Norman and English architecture, and became so important that the Abbot was invited to attend Scottish Parliament.
Today, Jedburgh Abbey has a Scottish statement of significance listing, due to its historic value to Scottish history.
