Dude I'm from Guam! Awesome I found your video as I am considering doing a re-gear for my JL. One day I'll ship it over and maybe we can go wheelin out there. I know a lot of really great spots near Mt. Lam Lam, and a bunch of people that go off roading out there.

I seen your WVU shirt, you from there. You must be a Air Force guy. I was born and raised in poca wv and left there in 1993 for the army. I just retired. I was a army infantry airborne ranger. Stationed in Hunter army airfield, Ft Bragg, Vicenza Italy, and ft Benning, I like you Air Force guys, we always got a ride to war, but never landed always pushed out of the planes, lol. I have a 2015 JKU lifted 6” MC lift with 37’s and a 2021 gladiator lifted 3.5” on 40’s

I have a 22 JT Rubicon with Nitto 35s. I was getting 250 miles per tank full before the tires then 200 miles after installing the 35s. I just had 4.88s installed and am on the first tank of gas. MPG is reading 15.5 currently and that's a mix of some stop and go and highway at 65. Thought I'd post for those considering a gear swap.

I put 35s with 2” lift and the tires look to small. Going with 37s soon and I think you talked me into the 4.88s rather then 5.13s. I will run the 4.10s for awhile just so I can feel the difference when I change gears.

Thanks for the video. Been trying to find some info on 4.88s. Did you even contemplate 5.13s? Every shop I talk to says 5.13 is the only way to go with 37’s. I’m trying to not gear too low but also don’t wanna be disappointed if down the road I decide to add more lift or weight.

I'm not comfortable going over 4.88 as tbe pinion head shrinks. I built my axles and know what goes into them. I added 35 spline shafts for strength and didnt want to make the gears the weak point. Check out my other videos.

TewlTalk thanks. I’ll go re-watch them. I kind of remember you talking pinion size in one of them. There is so much conflicting info on pinion size strength. Some say it matters and some say not enough to worry about. You obviously have more knowledge of this so find your opinion interesting. There are so many people running 5.13 and have heard very few of any cases of failure. But there is a lot of factors involved like weight. Hmmm. Thanks a ton for the response.

If you just gonna drive it on the road, you never gonna destroy your gears. Even if you off road it (without going full on stupid), you will not break them. The only time things break is when people start hammering and spinning wheels with no end.

@@c130aviatorLike your videos...I called Dana Spicer and they said 5.13 and 4.88 are very close in strength in the JL. 5.38 is where the pinion strength weakened a meaningful amount. I actually ordered Dana 4.88s today to run on my 6 speed jlur with 37s, but am considering swapping it to 5.13. The 6 speed is geared deeper in 1st gear at the transmission(5.13) vs. automatic with 4.71. 6th gear is at .72 in the 6 speed and .67 in the automatic. As a result, the automatic runs about 200rpm lower in the top gear on the hwy. Would you stick with 4.88? Biggest tire size I could eventually run is 38x13.50 on these axles bc I wheel it.

488 pinion has more beef and steel. The 8 speed trans doesn't need the 5.13s. I'm on 39s now. Still plenty. .5 gear difference isn't going to matter but 5.13 does make the pinion head weaker.

Those are just a visual aid in the sense that as you approach the red hatched area its time to fill up on gas. And time to check the coolant as it approaches the hot side of the gauge. Just aesthetics.
