Alpine engineer, Jim Walter, talks about the new Jeep Wrangler audio system, explains the design, and shows the vehicle used for development of the system.

I know I am way late here, but I just bought a 2016 Wrangler Unlimited with 3 owners, so who knows what abuse it has been through. I am absolutely blown away by this sound system. Every Jeep I have owned before I would throw aftermarket stuff in and it would sound good “for a Jeep”. This just straight up sounds good. The sound this system puts out would be impressive in any vehicle. Let alone a Jeep. Thank you for the time, effort, and precision in designing this. If you still work for Alpine and have any sway with the team that designs the head units, please for the love of god ask them to do away with the stupid parking brake safety feature. If it worked as designed I wouldn’t be so pissed off. But even with it wired correctly and the parking brake engaged I can’t access the damn settings. Ridiculous I have to by a third party bypass module to change the time on the clock lol. Seriously though, thank you! Freaking awesome system.

I purchased my 2015 Sahara and specifically waited until I found one with the Alpine system based on this video. I can honestly say that after a year, my anniversary is 4th of July, I am super happy! The system is very loud, clear and crisp. I actually downloaded the recommended songs from iTunes and agree. It sounds great with the top on or off. I purchased the rubber mat for the back with the hole in it so that the sub is not covered. After a year of putting stuff in the storage compartment I have no issues with the system at all. I would not be happier with this system and highly recommend it. Gentlemen, thank you for posting this excellent video! May I add a couple of songs? Black Eye Peas, Boom Boom Pow and Beastly Boys Paul Revere. Both are awesome. Cheers!

When I was shopping for my JK, I was initially only somewhat interested in the premium Alpine system. I've always appreciated good sound systems but I figured it was something I could add later in order to keep my purchase price down. Then I found this video. The amount of customization that went into the system between the enclosures and the speakers themselves convinced me that of all the options, the Alpine option was actually the one "must have." This is especially true since a local dealer confirmed that the Alpine system has to be installed at the factory. IOW, unlike just about every other option, you either get this upon delivery or forever hold your peace. All that said, I made the right choice. The system sounds incredible, even with the top off at highway speed. The bass could be a bit deeper, but it definitely holds its own and sounds dramatically better than any "factory" system I've ever heard.

Our 2015 wrangler unlimited soft top is the FIRST vehicle I have ever owned (I am 49 YO) that I have not found a need to add a after market system. It sound much better than the system I have in my 2005 crossfire (2,500 with a single 12" sub) with the top down. My GTI system beats it, but only when the top is down...with the top on it is very close. Very nice sounding system.

I just purchased a 2016 Wrangler 2 door Sport Black Bear with the Alpine system. As a consumer I really appreciate the time, quality, and effort that went into this system in this vehicle. I traded my 2015 Challenger Scat Pack with the Harmon Kardon system. I can truly say the HK system CANNOT compete with Alpine system. When I had the HK I was always looking for more volume. In the Alpine that does Not happen. The Alpine is twice the system at half the price. Great Job!

I rigged up a new Pioneer media player and 4 channel amp in a Jeep that had this system over the weekend (factory radio died)...What a surprise when I pulled the woofer out of its enclosure and saw it was a QUAD coil set up‼I ran the woofer on the rear channels and all the other speakers on the front channels on the amp and adjusted the front channel crossover until I saw the coil on the dash speaker barely starting to move and the mids/highs started sounding decent...Same with the sub, crossover point was probably between 50hz to 80hz The head unit also had an adjustable low pass...The amp was a Skar Audio SK-M4004D micro amp that measures only 7.9 x 4.64 x 1.65 inches. It's rated 140 watts per channel X 4 RMS@ 2ohms . It's a class D design and has a built in fan...The 5 channel version of this amp would have worked alot better as it has 3 crossovers but it's more expensive and would not fit under the seat...Was doing the work for a car dealer and they always want stuff as cheap as possible...Still, the speaker system sounds really good even when rigged up with a 4 channel amp...😎

+Andrew Parsons Interesting Fact: The 130/430/730 HU's do not directly impact the sound quality, as we are actually running the head unit in a fixed output mode. The HU acts as a pre-amp that simply sends CAN commands to the amplifier where all volume control, fade/bal and parametric EQ are done directly inside of the DSP of the Alpine amp. This is done to maximize S/N as well as keep consistency across all models as far as sound quality goes. Hope that helps ... and see my comments to Darren above on my EQ preferences. Jim

+Jim Walter Very cool! Thank you for the info. If I were to upgrade my HU, would I still be able to adjust the eq, and would I lose/gain sound quality/sound stage? I've read I would lose the ability to fade but the system sounds so balanced I don't know if that would be an issue. I'd love that Alpine upgrade kit but its a bit pricey. You simply run the amplifier in a fixed gain mode, where the 'pre-amp' is the new Pioneer deck, driving the Alpine amp with a variable signal input. This results in a slightly higher noise floor compared to the bus-based OEM design, however, it still works quite well for most that aren't over-scrutinizing things.

Each voice coil is 2 Ohms. Each amplifier is 45 Watts into 2 Ohms. All four coils in series should handle a 180 Watt amplifier (8 Ohms). Be sure you get the polarity correct. Test with a battery.

Rosa, Interesting that two vehicle have two different sounds. Are you certain that your daughter's JK has the Alpine system? The two easiest ways to tell are to check the dashboard speaker grills (on top by the windshield), to see that they have the Alpine logo ... and of course look for the subwoofer in the floor in the rear. The subwoofer itself is not for sale as a standalone item, however, if you have broken yours, you could go purchase one via MOPAR. IIRC it is P/N 68223349AD for the subwoofer assembly. The core 8x12 speaker is not sold individually.

I know I'm late to the party here. I found the bass overwhelming as well, what I have found, in my 2 door soft top hard rock, is that fading totally forward cuts the bass down significantly and provides a surprisingly easy to tune curve, which varies quite a bit based on how open or close the cabin is. I was considering going with a X209-WRA-OR kit, it appears that there is more PEQ bands, but I was really hoping to be able to get more control over the crossover settings. Based on what I've seen Jim say, I think that's all in the on-board amp, so I'd have to replace, and consequently, re-wire the entire system. That's not our of the realm of possibility, but not anytime soon. This is the first factory sound system I've ever been really pleased with. There are things it COULD have, but it's really quite good. Jim, if you ever come out for RMAF, I'd love to buy you a beer. Congrats on the newish gig with Pioneer.

@jimwalter3916
8 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Loarte Unfortunately, the changes from 2014 to 2015 were rather extensive, so a retrofit is quite the undertaking. The biggest difference is in the body harness, where you now need to run two extra circuits to both the overhead bar as well as the subwoofer. Next, bolting the subwoofer into the rear requires a new trim panel where the old 2014 subwoofer went, as well as a new floor to allow the subwoofer to breathe through. Lastly, the EQ codes sent to the amplifier from a 2014 won't work on a 2015 amplifier (different HW & SW) .. so it would require some coding that is not publicly available. Jim

Don't be fooled by the OEM look of the Alpine speakers. Their quality and performance is very high, assured by the enthusiast engineers at Alpine. Any change to the speakers would require a change to the equalization in the amplifier. The equalization is very sophisticated in today's OEM systems, more sophisticated than aftermarket equalizers, and is set with the Alpine speakers. Using even very high quality aftermarket speakers will not get as good results as the OEM system.

Apparently, there was a lot of customer dissatisfaction with the previous sound system. Frankly, I don't quite see the point of trying to make a Jeep audio system sound wonderful. A Jeep cabin seems like the worst conceivable environment for listening to music. I can see it now, in a Jeep showroom: "When I'm knee-deep in water or winching my ride out of a muddy riverbed, I demand only the very best in 8-channel sound."
