I'm an auto body tech and I did one of these warranties nearly every week for 3 years. Another spot the corrosion can happen is in the top of the window channel. If you roll down the window and pull down on the rubber where the window would slide into, there's a seam where the outer door skin is crimped to the door shell that will often corrode. The repair process Chrysler told us to use seemed like more of a band-aid than a fix.

Two dissimilar metals in contact will cause this. Does the same thing to boat motors which is why they put a zinc anode on the motor as it is a sacrificial material that can be easily replaced but will take the corrosion and spare the aluminum .
@The.Garage.Studio
3 ай бұрын
That's one thought, but I respectfully disagree. If that was the case corrosion would be the same regardless of the location. In the Southwest you see very little corrosion, but back east, and if you saw my video the Hawaiian special shows it has more to do with the environment and the humidity and moisture getting into contact with the bare aluminum panels than the galvanic corrosion theory.
@jamieplourde8735
3 ай бұрын
@@The.Garage.Studio Ah but remember Hawaii is an island surrounded by ocean and in the north east they use a lot of road salt in winter. The key is the salt. Just like a boat in the ocean. Boats in fresh water do not corrode nearly as fast or as bad as those in the salt water. So vehicles in the southwest are a long way from the environmental effects of the salt. As you mentioned in your video the 2025 jeeps have a zinc plate between the steel hinge and the aluminum door panel. That is the buffer just as the zinc anode is on salt water fishing boats. Also as you noted keeping your jeep clean is a huge help. We tend to use car washes regularly here in New England to wash away the salt. The carwashes even have undercarriage washers to help remove the salt on the frames and drive trains.

We have a 2020 Jeep Wrangler JL and we're seeing this issue. We were told to get three estimates and give them to the dealer who forwarded them on to Jeep. Two of the places outright refused to do the work because "it will come back and you'll be back here complaining about our work when Jeep is the problem". It says something to me when businesses are refusing to do work. We're going to get it fixed under warranty (though what Jeep will most likely approve will be a band-aid solution as someone on here said) and then trade it in. Very disappointing because my wife has always wanted a Jeep and has loved it. But the potential issues and the continual issues with this have just put us both off Jeeps.

I wold search around for a Jeep Dealer who can do the body work. If they do it right, it won't come back. They need to replace all the panels that have corrosion, as well as the hinges. They should paint the panel before applying the hinge and apply the sealant jeep recommends. Lastly, after the work is done, just handwash the car and do what you can to keep it out of the elements. If possible, try and garage the car. Good luck.

P.S. loooove all your videos, binged in two days :D My lovely 2003 Acura CL Type-S is dying, well not the car - this thing is immortal, but the transmission, which is the same price as the car >_< Couples days ago, got stuck in the middle of the desert on the way to LA and understood, that this car is not reliable anymore for long drives, especially in the heat. And so I am getting ready to finally allow myself my dream car - Wrangler! I am considering leasing for a couple of reasons - since I had only one and very old car - I really want to experience all those luxury add-ons that Jeep offers, plus a brand-new car feel :) Leasing is cheaper, and all the repairs will be covered by it, which is good while I am getting to know a completely new car!

Land Rover (the original vehicles going back to 1948 well prior to the birth of the DEFENDER) used aluminum bodies since their original prototypes. Bi-metal corrosion was (and may still be) a major problem with Land Rover and "Land Rover's" products. The Land Rover, again meaning the original vehicles starting in 1948, used thin sheet steel for their chassis frames. Those frames have a terrible corrosion problem. The Jeep Wrangler JK's (and probably JL's) use thicker gage steel than the old "Series" Land Rovers did. I drove Land Rovers from 1964 to 1993. I washed all my Land Rovers frequently after being on salted roads and even after driving in salt water. I never personally had a frame rust out on me. I am well aware of this problem, however, having spent about 15 years in the Land Rover business. Wash your vehicle frequently; don't drive in salt water unless absolutely necessary. I've had a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (JK) Rubicon since taking delivery of it in April 2012. No major rust issues on my Jeep as of 23 June 2024. Andrew McKane IV, Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii.

Its a GALVANIC CORROSION problem with the mating of dissimilar metals. If you electrically isolate the alum from the carbon steel, the corrosion stops; a nonmetallic gasket between the hinge and the door and nonmetallic bolts or some way to isolate the bolt holes (electrically).

I have an 18 JL and every door, hinge, hood and tailgate have this corrosion. My Jeep has been taken care of since new but its embarrassing to drive at this point. Tried to trade it in due to the corrosion but every dealership mentions the extensive bubbling throughout. Even one door that was repaired by the Jeep dealership has corroded again.

Since you are the original owner, and already taken it in for repairs, I feel that jeep cares might extend your warranty. I would give them a call directly to try and get it extended. It sucks, but I think you may have a case. Good luck. Sorry.

This is "NOT" Galvanic Corrosion. It's just the bare aluminum panels reacting to moisture. One person mentions Galvanic corrosion somewhere on the internet, and then the myth just continues to grow.

I bought my 2020 Wrangler in July 2023. I was completely unaware of this issue. I first noticed it in November 2023 and immediately made a claim under warranty. They need to replace my hood, doors, and tailgate. I’ve been waiting since Nov 2023 and the dealership just told me it will be at least another year or more before they can get to mine. I absolutely love my Wrangler but I’m trading my Jeep in next week and I will never buy a Wrangler again.

If corrosion bothers you so much that you’d consider paying 20k for repairs, the Wrangler might not be for you. Use that money to fix the death wobble, get some lockers, and buy a different daily driver.

@@safitz7863 it’s not stupid, it’s solid advice and I’m trying to help people out. I have been daily driving a Jeep JLU for years, and I frequently meet people who regret their purchase because of death wobble, vague steering, wandering, “unreliability (it’s actually very reliable on the trail), or even silly corroded hinges (that happens to all Jeep models), because they were buying it for the wrong reasons. It’s actually a pretty terrible dd, compared to other options. All I’m saying is, if you would consider dropping 20k to fix some corrosion on your jeep, to keep it looking sharp for city driving, you might want to reevaluate the intended use of your wrangler, so you don’t have buyers remorse. And you know as well as I do, there are plenty of people who regret buying a Jeep and call them junk. Also, there are plenty of vehicles like it, now, that offer more comfort with most of the capability. Bronco, land cruiser, land rover, grenadier, 4Runner, g wagon, etc. My comment wasn’t criticizing this video, I was trying to complement it and help new buyers. These are things I wish I knew when I was shopping for a JL. I don’t regret my Wrangler at all, it’s the best vehicle purchase I have ever made, but it will be a dedicated camping rig and I wouldn’t buy it again as a dd if I had a family. Have fun trolling people on the internet and calling them stupid.

One key issue not covered in enough depth was what does the dealer do to correct the issue, and more importantly, what's going to prevent it from happening again? Also, it'll help your appeal if you'd trim the chest hairs back a bit. Not only is it unattractive, but it's particularly off-putting to most women. Sounds silly, but it'll help your subscription rate.
@The.Garage.Studio

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah.. gotta trim that chest hair for sure. For the most part the dealer will. hopefully replace all the aluminum panels and replace the hinges with the new style that adds the zinc plate. No guarantee though it won't come back, but it is what it is.

blame it on your fine government. they are forcing automakers to meet a MPG rating. Jeeps are heavy because of the full axles front and rear, so they had to put an aluminum body and doors to keep the weight down but keep steel hinges which cause Galvanic Corrosion from Dissimilar Metals (steel/aluminum) contacting each other. I have a 2018 JLUR and live in a wet climate but I haven't had a problem with mine.
@The.Garage.Studio
3 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's debatable. I believe it's the moisture that's causing the corrosion on the aluminum panels, not galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion doesn't explain all the other corrosion coming from the panels not near the hinge.
