Man I love how clean the frame and such is! Mines a 94' and it's a project toy and haven't had the chance to really clean the heck out of the underside yet (had to straighten the frame first). Thanks for the video, I have to do a gearbox swap this weekend!

I couldn't get my pitman arm off even with a torch. Fortunately they are not expensive to replace. Folks without a nice heavy duty Milwaukee Impact wrench will find it easier to remove the pitman nut while the box is still bolted to the car. Not sure if this is necessary, but I tied down the steering wheel before starting the job so the steering shaft didn't move - something about the airbag not being damaged. I didn't need a re-alignment, but I did need to adjust the tracking a bit, which is an easy DIY job.. Nice work as usual.

Having this done at my local garage today. My '05 TJ Rocky Mtn has that lousy Mercedes gearbox. Hard to believe it wore out with just 32" ko2's with alloy rims. Don't think the Saginaw would have failed with this modest lightweight setup.

You should have used the jeep as leverage to remove the pitman arm. Is this a 97 jeep?

maybe 2003.?.. guessing by the location of the charcoal canister this is a 97-2002 (sometime in 2003 they moved the charcoal canister) guessing on the shape of the stereo this is a 2003-2006 in 2003 the stereo shape changed slightly)

what's the best way to clean the engine on a Tj? Is it safe to just use a water hose or what do I need to do?
@poemranger
8 жыл бұрын
Generally you would use degreaser and do your very best to keep it from getting on electronic parts of the engine bay. Not environmental friendly however if your doing it in your garage or on a paved surface use cat litter throw it down then sweep/dust pan it up put a pretty heavy layer down so it catches everything and to add an extra layer of protection particularly put cardboard under the cat litter (use cheap cause your just throwing it away). If your on say a driveway laydown some cardboard boxes broken down double or tripled up so that it does reach the ground. Water will not help because oil makes things pretty much water repellant. You can get degreaser at a parts store or you can order one online. For my hubby's 97 I used a superior product which is high dollar and works really well. If you have electrical items unplug the battery there is a product called "mass air flow sensor cleaner" you can use that safely on electrical parts just dont plug the battery back in until its had more than enough time to dry out completely.

Poem Ranger had a very detailed answer as well as taking the jeep to a spray ( DIY) Carwash - they useually have a engine degreaser setting I usually cover the distributor cap with a plastic bag and then spray the crap out of it :)
@poemranger

Its so detailed because I have no life. Someone once told me if you ever have to explain something assume you have to start with basics because this day and age. Caution hot coffee has to be posted on a coffee cup or you'll be sued because the person doesn't know coffee is hot (this was before iced coffee).

What was the result of the check engine light?
@RedneckGarage
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessie - on YJs the check engine light always come on when you turn on the ignition and should stay on for a few seconds and go back off- when it doesnt come on is usually an indication of a failed computer or no power to it. .

Redneck Garage Thanks for getting back to me! Was your check engine light on as a result of something with the repair you did? I'm going to try to replace mine next week and I want to avoid too many problems if I can. I've repaired/replaced lots of parts on my jeep but this one kinda makes me nervous 😓

I know, it has been in the mid 90's here, so I'm sure hotter down there, but, that is why I am staying inside where I keep the climate controlled, but, I know if you were doing what I'm doing, we wouldn't have a video to watch. Thanks! The reference I was making to the bottle of water was related to the beers you talk about when your getting ready to have one. :-)
