I put one of these on about a year ago. One of the best upgrades I've done. Be aware that this won't fit with the thicker 3 core radiators like the CSF that I had before. I went back to a stock one now. Also make sure your motor mounts are in good condition so everything doesn't shift forward when you go down a hill.

I went with aluminum 3 core, 190 thermostat, vented the hood, upgraded electric fan and also did your clutch fan upgrade and made sure my shrouds were back in place. Had to gut out a/c condenser didn't work any way. finally runs cool will not go above 210. Thanks Rusty good tips!

I run 30% Zerex GO-5 antifreeze year round with no issues, and that gets you down to about +7°F. I could probably get away with 20% antifreeze but, thats only down to +18°F, and I do get into areas in the 20's from time to time. I've been doing it for years, and it gives more than adequate rust, freeze, lubrication and cavitation protection for the places that I go. Besides if its getting much colder than 7°F, I'm probably in the wrong place. Even if it got to 0°F it isn't going to freeze up as soon as I shut off the jeep. Contrary to many people's belief, less antifreeze equals more heat transfer to the radiator. The antifreeze isn't what is preventing the boil over it's the pressure cap. The boil over protection numbers on the bottle are just marketing hype! So choose your precedence based on your coldest temperature. Now I do like to carry 1 qt of antifreeze on the trail. Mixed with the water that I'm already carrying it will get me to about 6.7% antifreeze plenty of glycol to keep going until I can get home. This doesn't offer any real freeze protection but, shouldn't find any rust when you get home. 10% = +26 °F 20% = +18 °F 30% = +7 °F 40% = -10 °F 50% = -34 °F 60% = -63 °F

A lower concentrations of glycol in the water, can remove more heat from the cylinder wall. You are measuring the water temperature at the thermostat not on the cylinder wall, so lowering the concentration of glycol in the water isn't going to solve your high temperature reading at the thermostat. A winch, lights, bars or anything else even objects to the side of the in front of the radiator can block significant amounts of air flow and have a huge Impact on it's ability to cool the engine. A Standard Duty fan clutch will lock up 60 to 70 percent of shaft RPM when engaged. A Heavy Duty fan clutch will lock up 70 to 80 percent shaft RPM when engaged. A Severe Duty fan clutch will lock up 80 to 90 percent shaft RPM when engaged. Heavy and severe duty clutches are designed for a deeper fan blades pitch but there's not much you can do about that. I used to run a heavy duty fan clutch on my ZJ and it did help the AC in stop and go traffic, and really didn't notice a change in fuel economy. At highway speed it backs off as air flow increases.
@markcarpenter3600

Although I have never used one you can try using a high flow water pump. This could move more heat to the radiator, but will do little if the heat can't get out of the radiator in the first place. I know this sounds silly but, make sure all of your fan shrouds are in place. Make sure your existing fan clutch is working properly. The fan clutch should be stiff when it is cold. Clear away any obstruction In front or to the side of any hole leading the radiator. Including below the bumper. Then try the heavy duty fan clutch and water pump in that order. Also make sure if you have an electric fan make sure it works properly. A hint for WJ owners the module that controls the electric fan is under the passenger headlight. When replacing it use heat compound between it and the body. Out of a hunch I tried it and haven't lost one since. I used the same compound that you use to put a computer processor to a motherboard. That way it can transfer its heat into the chassis.

I might do this. I noticed my daily driver XJ runs warmer when I drive in town. Once I hit the highway it runs where it should. I just bought the vehicle a few weeks ago from a family who were the original owners going back to 94'. It has a new water pump and radiator- I suspect they were having overheat issues. When they replaced these parts, I think they forgot to flush out the engine block and the heater core. The anti-freeze looked like something they might serve up at Starbucks...yeesh. So after a couple good flushes (one with Thermocure to remove rust) it's cooling a lot better- but I suspect the clutch needs replaced as well. What's a good upgrade for the chincy-looking electric fan in there? I couldn't believe how dinky that unit is!

Did it make much difference on the test drive? Might be worth getting just for the extra cooling if it helps much. Mine is an old 90 model, it's only over heated once because the temp sensor went out and the electric fan didn't kick on. I got it wired to a switch on the dash for now and just turn it on when I'm in town, on the highway I leave it turned off. I've got a new issue that started 3 days ago though. Now it idles fine and runs good, sounds smooth too.. Just when I want to take off from a stop, it bogs down and dies if I try to take off normal. I have to hit the gas hard around 2k to 3k rpm and it takes off spinning the tires and runs great. Sucks in parking lots though, try to barely touch the gas and it dies. It only does it when not moving and only between 900 and 1500 RPM. Anything above/below that RPM it runs great. It sounds like it's bogging down. I've been googling and looking on forums but haven't found anyone with the same problem yet.

Rusty 411 I been outside fightin with my Jeep all day long, since early this morning lol. The TPS is only about 3 months old, I did double check it for the correct adjustment today also. I rerouted all my vacuum lines as well thinking maybe one had got pinched off. I cleaned the throttle body and IAC out with some B12 and put it back together, the bogging down/stalling issue was still there but then a new issue started lol. It stayed at 2200 to 3k on idle and wouldn't come down no matter what I did. So I took it all back apart and noticed some scaring inside the throttle body where the plate opens/closes, the scaring was letting too much air through and after I cleaned out all the gunk, much more air was getting through which caused the extremely high idle lol. I bent the throttle stop back to allow it to close off more and adjusted the plate to seal evenly on each side and that seemed to fix all my issues. It's always something with these ol Jeeps but I really do enjoy working on them when it's cheap fixes like these today lol.

Is that fan clutch geared somehow? I dont see how its moving any more air, its just a clutch and the same fan moving at the RPM set by the same motor. The only effect you should have gotten is a better clutch grab. Its like saying that putting a stage 3 clutch in the trans gives you more RPMs or Power. Its not making sense to me. Have you reviewed it since install?
@Rusty411
6 жыл бұрын
feellnfroggy the clutch turns the fan in relationship to engine rpms the stock clutch has less friction and doesn't sound the fan after certain rpm levels are reaches it let's off the clutch this fan clutch is larger and for a larger fan so the clutch is set up for more weight so it stays engaged a lot more and foe more rpms that the stock xj unit give a try you will see
@feellnfroggy
6 жыл бұрын
I dont need it, I drive a zj now. I was just curious at the way you explained a clutch giving more airflow. I can fully grasp the idea of it running for a greater period of time for kicking in sooner, and staying on longer, and more rpms in the sense of less slipping, but the way I heard sounded like you were experiencing a greater flow at the same rpms like you would get with a geared fan or different angled blades. We're on the same page now.
