I really like Jeepneys. Whenever I am in the Philippines I take photos of the best looking Jeepneys. The ones with the bright colors, airbrushed painting on them and lots of decorations. After retirement (about 10 years from now) Id like to take extended vacations to the Philippines and Id like to have my own Jeepney built. I'll need a slightly larger drivers area because I am tall. Id also like to put tall exhaust pipes similar to the ones you see on large diesel trucks. and Id like to find a good airbrush artist and have him paint fancy pictures on the side....Jeepneys are like Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Everyone is different......The other thing I like to see on the roads in the Philippines are the old US Army trucks. When World War 2 ended the US Army left thousands of those trucks behind. Those trucks are so well made that you still seem them on the roads 75 years after they were built for the war. Amazing!!!!

Roger Gordon Yes i must admit there are some really cool looking jeepneys. Most of the better looking ones i saw were in the citys. That is a nice goal to look forward to when you retire. If i am not mistaken i think the jeepney originated from the war the US used to carry their troops in them.

You are correct. In September 1945, there was a large American army in the Philippines. It was getting ready for the invasion of Japan. However the dropping of two atomic bombs brought about the surrender of Japan. The Philippine economy had been destroyed by the war. So when the American Army left they Philippines they left all their vehicles, supplies, medical equipment, foodstuffs, field kitchens etc behind to help the Filipinos recover from the ravages of the war. The Filipinos loved the Jeep. Soon they began to extend the length of the passenger compartment and the Jeepney was born. A friend of mine was in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and whose ship was constantly coming and going from the Philippines told me that back then the Jeepneys were still the old World War 2 Jeeps. Filipino companies began making their own Jeepneys in the 1970s. The bodies were hand made and the engine, gearbox, steering came from scrapped Japanese cars. By the 1980s high quality Japanese Diesel engines were being used. In the 1990s longer bodies that could carry more passengers were being made....On youtube, type in "Milwaukee Jeepney" and Valsmotorshop" Both of these companies make customized Jeepneys with lots of chrome, loud stereos even a front bumper that can be raised and lowered. I hope you are having a lot of fun on your visit to Samar..Roger
