@@oupahens9219 You don't know what you are talking about. John can play over changes upside down and backwards. My only complaint is he tends to take the same approach every solo: blasting up and down single note phrases at break neck speed. Jeff tends to do more tonal poetry and textural stuff. He was a master of that. John could do that pretty well on a Strat, but Jeff could not play over changes like John could. John is a college-trained musician, with knowledge of and ability with advanced theory, as well as being a uniquely talented artist. Jeff was a brilliant autodidact. Both, great artists.
@lesleyclow4799

John McLaughlin can improvise at incredible speed over any jazz chord changes but when he plays very fast, he often doesn't finish his phrases very cleanly. Jeff is more limited technically (often relies on the pentatonic scale) but overall I find him more musical. I believe it is equally difficult to play interesting musical phrases at slower speed.

I remember asking John for guitar lessons after a concert with Ronnie Scott and Pete Brown(poet)at Borough Road College in Isleworth when I was a student there, would have been around 1970. I thought he was amazing but he said that he didn't know enough to give lessons on the guitar.Who would have thought that 24 years later I would be working with Jeff Beck in my studio(Parkgatestudio near Battle, E Sussex)recording music for a Billy Friedkins(The Exorcist) film with him, Pino Palladino and Stewart Copeland. Funny ol' world. Beck one of the true greats and I've been listening to multiple recordings and live performances with tears in my eyes all week.

For all fans of both John and Jeff, give another listen to "Electric Guitarist." 1976, a solo album by McLaughlin, it incorporated unprecedented performances by a plethora of geniuses, maybe nowhere more evident than on "Are You The One," an awesome romp by John and Jack Bruce and Tony Williams. An absolutely unrivaled performance by the people we most loved back then.

Most of the people criticizing him haven't heard the range he can play. You sort of have to, to invent three genres of music. Like all people who take chances, some of them are not going to appeal to some people as much as others. I like his linear stuff better that the deep chords, but he's not following any dictates but his own. Except when Miles told him what to do. And when he worked his way through the Indian ragas. And the bebop canon.

Fascinating... And it should be remembered that these two are approximate contemporaries: At just about the time that Beck took Clapton's place in the Yardbirds, McLaughlin was in an early version of the Graham Bond Organization (along with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker), shortly to become a sideman with Miles Davis. And then, about seven years after that, the trunk of Fusion Guitar rose out of the musical soil of the early '70's, and these guys, from two different directions, were its roots. I love the idea that this piece, John Lewis's masterpiece, written for his own Modern Jazz Quartet so many years before, and named for one of the most seminal Jazz guitarists in the idiom, is being played by these two with a fat-back groove; I also love that the 8-bar "bluesy" section that ends each chorus in the original has been extended here to about 32 bars each time, with the rhythm section going into a blues shuffle, giving both gents plenty of time to wail. I enjoyed everything about this. (Addendum, a year later) I've seen Beck with Clapton, Page, Guy, and the King; I've seen McLaughlin with Dimeola, Coryell, and De Lucia; never have I ever seen either of them show this much admiration and enjoyment, playing in the company of another.

No one can top Beck and McLaughlin. This is just balls out incredible playing. Beck is especially phenomenal here as he always is. Nice to see him let loose with McLaughlin. I saw Beck smoke Clapton and Page years ago and also jam with Stevie Ray in one of the best guitar duels I've ever seen.
