I got to this vid by searching Jeff Lang amplifiers. I wanted to know if he mic'd up his amps and what ones for the awesome punchy sound he gets. I just recently took my Alvarez Blues 51 to get an Acoustech Dynamic Field Pickup put in which I bought about 10 years ago when searching for a better sound and reading what Jeff Lang does for setup. Anyway it's mind boggling to see under a thousand views on a two year old vid from such an innovative player-searcher-for-unique-but-goddamn-interesting-phat sounds.. This is the first comment ive ever written in youtube as far as know, so yeah the worlds gone mad that's all

Thanks for sharing this inside info Jeff... The electric balagma looks really interesting - not that the other weirdo concoctions don't ;) I love mixing up different pickups in guitars. The gypsy Jazz pup in the neck position sounds rather special on the slide Strat too... I have been fascinated with the idea of fretless guitar since learning that Adrian Belew had one, and recorded with it on the Twang Bar King album. I just better do a DIY job I guess, and get on with it, rather than just thinking about it. I see (thanks to your helpful camera work), there seems to be a bit of grey area you can get away with, (as far as intonation accuracy goes) - did you find having to think about getting over the fret marker a problem when first playing it, or have your years of slide playing, made it come easy. I don't play that much slide, so I expect there would be a fair learning curve for me, principally being a mere mortal guitarist, albeit with an ear for the weird. I was thinking of David Torn, when listening to your loop sampling and manipulation on the live rig vid. Cheers again!!

Ian Mason cheers. The fretless lets you use your ears for intonation, much like slide playing does. That is to say that for certain intervals (eg major 3rd or dominant 7th) it’s desirable to the ear to play behind where the fret would be instead of right on top of it.

Hi Ian, the great thing about playing fretless is that you can use your ears for intonation and not have to settle for sharp major thirds and dominant sevenths like we're stuck with on a fretted guitar. David Torn - I'll take that comparison, thanks! He's brilliant.
