The expanded playoffs lowered the bar for how many wins teams think they need. It’s going to be much the same going forward, probably. Why spend a ton of money to have a 105-win team when you could make the playoffs with 87 and have a similar chance at winning the WS?
@bigbrother4059

Maybe a little bit, but remember the braves won the World Series with not many more wins (89) in 2021.
@gentlemanjake8005
3 ай бұрын
@@bigbrother4059 I do, but I don’t know what that has to do with the expanded playoffs. Are you saying that those Braves would have been a fringe team? Okay, sure. But that has nothing to with the current format and/or the target win total changing.
@samuelsandate9804

@@gentlemanjake8005Spending doesn't guarantee anything, dude. Tell me you haven't been paying attention to all the bad contracts we have in baseball? Tell how Rendon worked out for the Angels and how many playoff wins they have? How about the Nationals bringing back Stephen Strasburg? Oh yeah, they miss the playoffs every year since they gave him that 7 year deal. How about Kris Bryant? How is it working out for the Rockies? I can go all and on and naming guys like Javi Baez, Xander Boagerts, Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery most recently that are turning into bad contracts.
@gentlemanjake8005
3 ай бұрын
Snell and Montgomery got one-year deals, and the other contracts you’re citing were roundly regarded as questionable or outright terrible ones. But you’re basically proving my point. You’re against owners spending, which I guess you think is good for some unspecified reason. Not to mention, you’re ignoring a lot more other expensive contracts that have paid dividends like Ohtani, Judge, Cole, Betts, Harper, Wheeler, J-Rod, Olson, Freeman, Tatis, Riley, J-Ram, Castillo, etc.
@samuelsandate9804

@@gentlemanjake8005 It can go either way for teams. But at the end of the day you have to know how to draft and develop to win, period. The Orioles are a huge example of that. Yeah, now they have a new ownership, but they have almost all their needs filled from within that they really just need to sign Corbin Burnes and they're set up well.

I 100% agree with Passan on the records being close being a good thing for the sport, but I think the way it is occuring right now is not great for the sport. I think it will get better but the way teams are underperforming is not a great product on the field for many clubs. Parity should come via other avenues outside of "mediocrity", or else it is hard to hype up the sport. This outcome is better than having a handful of top teams and everyone else being bad though

I think the extra wild card in both leagues does the opporite of what people thought it would for competition. It allows teams to admire mediocrity and strive for it instead of going for 90+ wins. We've seen the past 2 yearswhere 85 wins is all you need to make a run, and it incentivises teams to opt out of free agency because they dont need to add a ton of payroll to get to that final wild card spot.

Isn’t the expanded playoffs fixing a problem with another problem? The parody in the league stinks so we introduce a format that rewards mediocre teams instead of addressing the prominence of super teams? Feels like the problem is right there and as a fan of a small market team with the Brewers that also has an invested owner, revenue sharing isn’t where it needs to be to reasonably say the problem is just the owners. When the revenue sharing line is $70m below the league average payroll then we have a problem.

Fix the playoff format. Dumb as hell to see mediocre teams in the ws every year. Having a bye is terrible for a baseball offense. At least make the DS a 7 game series. Doesn't always feel like the best team wins a 5 game series. Pretty much always feels like the best team wins a 7 game series

"Baseball doesnt need a salary cap, it needs invested owners" is just not a good enough argument against the cap. There will still be owners who spend more than others no matter what, and that intrinsically creates a uneven playing ground. I want to root for my organizations ability to draft and develop players on otherwise completely equal grounds, not root for my billionaire owner to spend more than your billionaire owner. Thats not sports.

Rangers have had SO many injury’s. They need Josh Jung back, they just got Jon Gray back. Once Scherzer and another starter comes back their pitching will finally be fine, it will make bullpen more solid moving Heaney and Dunning to pen. I think they need to add another bat to the lineup to help Seager and Semein to help carry the load.

Yes Yankees complaints are 1st world problems in comparison to the rest of the league. However Jake brings up fair questions considering the 2022 yankees were dominant offensively in the first half of the year and completely broke down by the time they got to the playoffs. If any team figures out how to pitch to Soto and spams knee high sliders to Judge the Yankees could get cooked if they don't upgrade
