If you're a drummer, try playing to Steely Dan's "Your Gold Teeth Part II" from the 1975 album "Katy Lied." That part was so difficult that Donald Fagen gave Jeff some Charlie Mingus records with specific songs outlined for him to listen to in order to get the feel he wanted. Jeff came back and delivered one of the best drum performances ever. At the time Jeff died, Donald wasn't into live playing at all since SD quit the road in 1974. But he came out to LA (which Fagen hates) to play at Jeff's tribute concert at the Universal Amphitheater. Even more than George Harrison, Donald's appearance at Jeff'ss concert was the biggest shocker of all. Jeff and Bernard Purdie are probably the most recorded Dan drummers ever. That is saying something folks. Becker and Fagen had extremely high standards in drum performances. They could tell in bar 24 if a snare hit was a little softer than in the rest of the tune.

@Halli Day No... that double sound is all foot. He’s working with rebound off of the bass drum head to get it to happen so quickly.
@beyondthegong
3 жыл бұрын
@Halli Day Essentially, yes. On the first hit, he’s got his toe down to match the position of the beater (at that moment, against the drum head) then he slides his foot, or toe, backwards (releasing the pressure against the drum head) but almost immediately then slides his foot forward again to basically intercept the beater as it springs back to its neutral position.. cutting it short and returning it against the drum head. Due to the springiness of the pedal mechanism, it’s possible to get a type of bounce going by using this method. Couple this with a ton of practice and some good leg muscles, anyone can do it. To make it groove like this.. well, that’s the Porcaro gift in action.

Steve Smith. Stewart Copeland. I like Phil Collins and Don Henley. I don't like a lot of complicated flash. I like Bernard, too.

@FrankOlsonTwins No one plays a simple groove quite like Jeff Pocaro, and that is the sign of a true Master. We are but humble students in the dojo of this video haha.

Best drummer that ever lived, IMO. If you need proof try to play the Rosanna shuffle perfectly. Modern Drummer magazine rated it as one hardest patterns to play perfectly. This guy invented it.

Wrong. Bernard Purdie Home at Last by Steely Dan. Fool in the Rain John Bonham. And it's a HALF shuffle, btw. I love Jeff and today's his birthday, but you didn't hear a word he said. He SAID what I just told you.

@Steve Cubis - Nice comparison! :-)) I had to straight away think of this Chick Corea & Herbie Hancock 'Shreds' video - only that Jeff's pals were actually being serious kzitem.info/news/bejne/k2ifm2ura5d-d3o :-))

His drum groove in that intro is the same one he played in Mushanga off of TOTO The Seventh One (1988). Brilliantly simple yet persistent pulse. Great tune. And the drum part is almost as iconic as that tune written about Steve Porcaro’s ex-girlfriend... I can’t remember her name... 😏

This vid of Jeff’s I first saw a VHS copy of back in the early to mid ‘90s and was hugely influential for me on drums. After growing up hearing Toto and Skags and Steely Dan 70’s and 80’s this one video make me have to go back to hear all the subtleties that were always there but had never heard before. Jeff was always about taste. I was a fan of his music long before I knew who he was. (His brothers too) Thank you Porcoro Brothers for all the fan freakin tastic music to jam to and show us all how it’s done.
