What's so great about this movie is the absolute realism. While the Boot Camp scenes are only representative of a small portion of Basic Training it depicts all the best parts and all of this shit really happens very much like it does in real life. Besides the fact Ermy actually was a real Marine DI( He was an E6 so he got to spend alot of time studying the Animal Acts of the Senior DIs like Gunnery Sgt Heartman. The only real difference is in real Basic Training Army, Navy and especially the Marine Corps is there are usually, especially in the beginning between 4 and six of these maniacs going off all at once. The other difference is they are especially all together much less intelligible and easy to understand. In real life the lectures about open foot lockers might happen in the beginning but at some point they just walk through throwing unsecured shit right out the damn windows. They aren't nearly as nice and four times as funny when they do this shit. They don't just dump your shit on the ground and say " let's see if anything missing" They just grab people's shit and throw it everywhere indiscriminately shooting for distance.

I beat the shit out of my older soldier because he was doing that to me repeatedly (throwing shit out of my locker and making me put it back nice and neat..) I was able to smash his face before his 20 buddies ran out of the TV room and gave me the beating that left me blue all over my body... But boy, did that feel good (I mean the smashing his face). It was well worth it. Nobody ever fucked with me no more because the next day, I went into their room and told them I'll fuck them up even worse - one by one, when nobody's around. Yeah, I had to drive a soldier who blew his brains out, too. He was still alive while in the car. Died before we could get to the hospital. You know, this mental abuse doesn't get you tougher if it crosses the line of no return. It can play ugly games with your mind and some people will inevitably snap. Usually, they snap against themselves. This kind of sick humor that targets an individual may sound funny to many but often ends up making him feel totally worthless.

Can corroborate. My dad was a Navy doc stationed on Pariss Island. He told me that marines would come in obviously beat up by the DIs. If asked what happened the reply was invariably "Sir, tripped over my footlocker, Sir". (probably more like "the private tripped over his footlocker" but anyway.)

This marine DI was the real deal. Initially, he was supposed to coach the actor playing that role in the movie. At some point, the director said “Why don’t you just play the role” And he took the acting job. Now, the thing is, he tried extra hard to be a pleasant and nice guy outside of that movie. He did not want to be viewed as the hard corp guy he was, used to be. Thank you for your service, sir.
