Jennifer Smith, who stands 5 feet, 2 1/2 inches on the ground, has been a human cannonball for 18 of her 34 years. Smith professionally known as the "Cannon Lady" is shot out of the 27-foot barrel of a truck-mounted cannon by her husband Rob. In less than a half second, she'll accelerate to more than 45 miles per hour, shooting 40 feet into the air and 82 feet across the arena floor.
Jennifer Smith is part of the Smith Family of Human Cannonballs. It's been the family business since 1975, when her father, Dave "Cannonball" Smith, a former junior high math teacher who abandoned trapezoids for the trapeze, quit catching other aerial artists, built a cannon and began flying wireless. At 66, he's still at it, traveling across the country and around the world blasting over Ferris wheels and maintaining his Guinness World's Record for the longest human cannonball run, traveling at more than 70 miles per for a distance of more than 185 feet. "He's a machine," said Jennifer. "Nobody can touch him."
She, her brother and two sisters followed her father into a career that has taken her to 10 countries, performing in circuses, fairs, festivals and motor sport events. She's appeared on the Tonight and Today shows, the Discovery Channel and been featured in USA Today and National Geographic for Kids. At this point, only she and her father, and brother, are still at it, she said. Two of her sisters have retired. She doesn't expect to continue as long as her father has. "I don't want to be a 50-year-old grandma flying out of a cannon, but I feel strong now, and I feel I have several years ahead of me. I will do whatever I can to prolong my career, because I absolutely love it".
