I remember the day he died...I was driving to work and the played 3 dead songs in a row on the radio, which never happened. Then it was like a punch in the stomach :(. Some of the best times of my life were at Dead shows. Jerry, you are still missed all these years later.

brother i was a kid, raised on jerry because of my dad. I was in his little pickup, driving on highway 24 heading east ,about to hit the caldecott, when 104.5 reported jerry was dead. that moment we hit above the fog line and went into the tunnel, came out in orinda side to beautiful skies. my pops was crying his ass off and i didnt really understand because i was young. it was the most perfect timing .

My father was a devout Dead Head; Bay Area born and raised. Went to about 100 concerts by his estimate. He was on his way to work when he heard the news of Jerry's passing on the radio. He was so moved that he had to pull over.

My personal journey with The Boys began at The Fillmore East and continued throughout a lifetime of them beside me each and every step of the way. Now have a granddaughter who listens to and asks about "Uncle Jerry". Nothing will ever fill the void of our loss, but passing the Music and the Spirit along the generations ahead helps lighten the load that lingers. Know it's what he would have wanted and nothing left to do.....

Today is Aug. 9th 2011, where were you 16 years ago when you heard the news that we had lost this truely great musician. i was crossing the Richmond San Rafael bridge driving a tractor trailer around 5am when the dj said that Jerry Bear had died. I had just started my day and had to call the boss and tell him there was a death in the family and i was unable to drive his 80k lb truck safely... God i miss the force that Jerry was.

I think every dead head remembers where they were when the news came over the radio , I was doing some electrical work at a cement plant in the mechanics shop where they service the cement trucks, each mechanic had thier own radio and tuned to their favorite station , I had been working near a particular radio set to my city's most popular classic rock station when the news hit my ear, I also took the remainder of the day off as I had lost a family member, that night led to fellowship with friends in gathering to remember the man who brought such peace and good vibes throughout our lives.

It's hard to believe that he's been gone 22 years already. But then again, I suppose, when you take into consideration how he abused himself... drugs, alcohol, tobacco, his weight issues, the endless touring, etc... perhaps it's amazing that he lived as ling as he did. Nonetheless, dying at 53 in a drug rehab center is really sad, especially for such a legendary icon. I love the Dead and Jerry and Pigpen. I miss them all. 😟

That's a fucked up thing to say. Phish forged their own path and they have a deep respect for the Dead. So much so that the Dead invited Trey to play the Fare There Well shows. And actually, Phish did almost die because Trey was in a bad spot with the same drugs Jerry was messing with. Fortunately, Trey got clean, didn't die and is a shining example of how to lead an improvisation rock band into middle age.

I saw them in 67 I think in Menlo Park Calif. They were playing at Magoos Pizza Parlor. They were JUST starting. We were straight football type guys. We could not get into the front so we walked around back ang fot a peek from the rear door of the Pizza Parlor. We saw Jerry with his big hair and we said. "Oh they are just a bunch of Hippies and left." Yep trufe story. I went to Menlo Atherton Highj School with Beob Weir. Not exactly sure of the year, maybe 68..

the truth needs to be told for accuracy. jerry died of an overdose. he had the heroin sunck in by a follower/dealer. jerry always smoked heroin he hated needles. and not having any way to smoke it, he was forced to snort it and he never did that and was not used to it and succumbed to the nod forever.thanks for keeping him hooked bob weir and still milking him to this day. jerry died with no one around and had barely anything meanwhile bob weir is worth almost 100 million dollars from all the licencing deals he has made with major corporations like walmart, sanuck, target, urban outfitters, gap, levis and many more.

Bob wasn't a heroin dealer. Sounds like you are just a Garcia fan, not a Deadhead anymore. Of course I am against the commercialization, but if I ignore it I can still enjoy the music.
