What treasured footage of spectacular singing actors. I sorely miss Jerry Hadley's voice and presence in our world.

One of most exciting in my life of almost 89 years! Yet, sadness lingers for the opera’s finale, and, what it portends in the real world!

Quel document exceptionnel !

Incredible singing by Hadley. On par with the greats of the past. The last great lyric tenor.

I completely agree with you, I have been reading many of your posts about him and singing in general. And I agree 100%. I am also a tenor, not so different in type from Hadley and grew up in an old tradition that then was messed up by lighter, brighter, masky, parlando teachings....to the point where I quit singing, Hadley has helped me find my way back. Listening to him reminds me of what the true Italian school is. Because of the natural brightness of Mediterranean voices (of which I am one) people confuse the sound with what they are doing. When you follow the principals of Garcia, Pasta, Caruso, Lamperti, Melocchi, Lotti, etc. Golla aperta, fiato diaframatico intrecostale, posizione di inspiazione...then all the rest comes with it.....it is like modern teachers try to give you ring before teaching how to open the voice, they are skipping steps and trying to get to a result rather than a true process. In my opinion

He really is the perfect Pinkerton, isn't he?

fontevrault46 Absolutely! He said once that he didn't like singing this role and removed it from his repertoire in the late 80's, but I think he was perfect for this role.

@@virginiaabrahamse6048 Yeah, I think he said it was a role where you sing as loud as possible and pray you hit the high notes. He probably felt it didn't leave a lot of room for artistry. Miss him so much!!

@@fontevrault4690 Yes, that is because his volume is not big enough for this role and his voice not heavy enough. But I like his acting very much because he shows, how the story will end....

Dear Brandon, Many years ago, I sang the part of the marriage broker, in a professional production with Met tenor Brian Sullivan and my maestro’s wife, Era Tognioli ( I’m not sure of the spelling): she was not able to make the final curtain call: she was overcome by the last Act! Nevertheless, another real-life tragedy awaited Hadley!!!

There's a problem with the date. I've been researching Jerry's performances. According to the Wiener Staatsoper archives, Jerry was in Vienna from the 20th of September to the end of December, 1982, doing three operas - L’ÉLISIR D’AMORE, MADAMA BUTTERFLY and DER ROSENKAVALIER. MADAMA BUTTERFLY was NOT with Judith Haddon.
