Mr. Walker used to let me pick peaches from his trees on his property in the Hill Country. He is a genuinely nice man. I've always admired him...

Heard this for the first time yesterday. It made me cry. It is a sort of tribute, to me, to all caregivers. People caring for spouses with Alzheimers or other debilitating disease. The memories, the love, care, and kindness. This is the human experience encapsulated.

A once in a generation song sung by a once in a generation performer who had the great humilty to select songs that he did not write and present them to us under the umbrella of his fame.

I've loved this song for at least 30 years. I'd only heard Steve Goodman sing it, but I really love JJW's version! I am also a huge Jerry Jeff Walker fan.

Hard to believe that we were once lucky enough to have a TV show called the Texas Connection hosted by none other than Jerry Jeff. I wonder if there is a boxed DVD set available.

@elmagnifico753 As I heard the story, Michael Smith's sister (named Margaret) was dating a Dutchman, or a guy named "Dutch." Michael started writing a song about a young couple, but the song seemed to have different ideas. It's about unconditional love, and the frailties of age.

mike smith Michael..I DO APOLOGIZE!! My fingers could not keep pace with my brain ( or vice versa) Was thinking of the late Mr. Goodman of course, and my mistake was there for all to see. The second one this new century... :-) What an honor getting to chat with you!!! I do LOVE the song! My dear friend Bruce Dalzell first introduced me to it maybe late 70s (???) And still, when his flat top, he and I are in the same space, good chance your song will be in the air. GOLLY, had I not erred in my eval, I likely would never have had this opportunity to "meet" you... and rather than continue my usual means of dating an event by assigning it a decade ( gets more difficult as the decades go by ) ..what date was the song issued? So, I'm happy to have gotten your attention... blessings on you my friend! :-)) Come to Ohio and play at Jorma Kaukonens Fur Peace Ranch...PLEASE! I'll plug you to the camp manager..all best !! Jerry

There wouldn't be many JJW songs where John Inman plays acoustic, not a slashing Tele and Lloyd Maines (sp) is also on acoustic rather than his standard lap steel.....just see the stellar band in the Navajo Rug and heaps more.

Those of you who like this song---and it is lovely---find the solo versions of this (there are several, at least two of which, although not the best, are on KZitem) by Steve Goodman. Different, but SO much better.
