The first "wild man" of rock & roll. I think this is the tamest performance of Jerry's "Great Balls Of Fire" I have seen. Legend has it that he once set his piano on fire after his performance because he wasn't allowed to close the show. According to the legend, he told the closer (Chuck Berry) to "follow that". Jerry Lee Lewis was an original.

"Great Balls of Fire" (1989) is the biopic of Jerry Lee Lewis, as Hollywood presented it. Something to watch someday, starring Dennis Quaid.

Jerry Lee Lewis grew up in church playing the piano, but he turned the piano into a fun rocking instrument not just boring church music. He was a wild man especially for his time.

One of the original SUN RECORDS Memphis 5, (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee) Jerry would have had a more popular following but just before his first UK tour, he showed up with his 14 year old, 2nd cousin as his new wife and was shunned for several years.

In 1957 this sort of music was forbidden in the Bible Belt areas of the U.S. It was quite a few years before we oppressed kids were able to hear it. The censorship was formidable.
@lupodelupis3672

In my country (Italy) there was the same strict religious censorship concerning the music. Rock 'n roll had the mark of "the music of the devil". And that cause here the Catholic Party (Democrazia Cristiana) ruled for fifty years and the censorship was controlled only by their men: "pious", conservative, bigots with links in Vatican. My father told me you couldn't find rock albums in the records shops, or you couldn't hear rock in tv or at the radio: they were banned! Only after the 1968, the year of the protests in the whole Europe, things slowly changed and they begun to loose the grip of the censorship. They realised that in other countries this kind of music was selling a lot so the italian record companies pushed the goverment to let them make business with rock. And considering the italian state charge every record sold with an appropriate tax (called "Siae" with a stamp on every copy) it was a win-win situation.

I was at a concert of his in the 1980s standing right next to him and the piano. He made that piano SCREAM like I have never heard one before. It could not be captured by audio, you had to experience it in person.

I saw Jerry Lee Lewis in 1961 when I was in the Navy. It was in Newport News, VA. Jerry Lee was the main act. When he got up off the seat and took his jacket off he threw it into the crowd. One lady screamed out, "Take it off." He said back, "You stay for the 2nd show and you'll see more." He simply tore up the stage.

Jerry Lee Lewis was one of the more flamboyant & wilder rock & roll singers of the time in the 50's-60's. He was nicknamed "The Killer". His piano playing & showmanship were legendary. He had a lot of hits such as "Breathless", "Wild One", "High School Confidential", "What'd I Say", "Another Place, Another Time" etc. His career faltered for a time when he married his 13-year-old cousin.

Rock and Roll music started in 1955. Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holley, and many more. They were the first pioneers of this new genre called Rock and Roll. Jerry Lee Lewis (AKA The Killer) may have been the wildest of them all. This southern farm boy could sure sing and play the piano. His cousin is none other than the world-Famous Preacher, Jimmy Swaggart.
