@@robertszvetics210 The 1960s was a complex time for Jerry Lewis. He was hired by ABC to do a variety TV series in 1963, but quit the show after a handful of episodes due to pay disputes. The show eventually became "The Hollywood Palace", which aired from 1964 to 1970. NBC hired him to do another variety TV series, "The Jerry Lewis Show". It only lasted from 1967 to 1969. Jerry Lewis appeared as guests or guest hosts on a number of TV shows and TV series during the decade, in addition to acting in movies.

Eleven years old in 1962--my favorite summer. Stayed with my aunt and uncle and they let me stay up to watch the tonight show with the guest hosts (I remember seeing Groucho) before Johnny's arrival. @@markgiardina1303 Late-night talk show hosts have always had political jokes as part of their monologues, but it is different when they add "news and commentary" segments, disguised as a satire of network news broadcasts. Stephen Colbert does it, because it was part of what he did in his previous TV job. Seth Meyers does it because he did it on the "Weekend Update" segments on "Saturday Night Live". The same goes for Jimmy Fallon. There is no excuse for Jimmy Kimmel for what he does on his talk show. What he does is political sniping of anyone or any political entity in a position of power. But it is historically not unusual. Walter Winchell and Dorothy Kilgallen did the same thing during the early-to-mid-20th Century, and celebrities and political leaders hated them for it.

Incidentally, the first 13:47 segment was seen at 11:15pm(et)- this is why news promos were seen instead of "commercial breaks", as NBC just couldn't sell ad time during that first quarter-hour. More stations began to schedule half-hour local newscasts at 11pm, and just skipped the first fifteen minutes, preferring to "start" the show at 11:30pm(et) [13:52]. Johnny Carson didn't like the absence of affiliates at 11:15 either, and decided not to appear during that opening quarter-hour after February 1965 [he convinced NBC to "officially" start the show at 11:30 by January 1967].

Joe Postove NBC has its East Coast storage facility in an air-conditioned nondescript warehouse in North Bergen, NJ, which has rows of Betacam tapes available for in-house producers for their productions (think docs like"Boomers") and they have a boatload of stuff (see their website). But music rights (think "Beverly Hillbilllies" theme song removed) and copyrights are the biggest legal problem with having any of this re-air so its not worth it -but for "News/Documentary", clips ARE available.

In 1970, there was a studio fire in Burbank, California, that destroyed the NBC videotape and kinescope archives. Not a lot of footage survived the fire. Most of the NBC footage that still exists consists of kinescopes and black-and-white videotapes that were recorded by local television station affiliates. The same goes for ABC and Dumont. In both cases, their kinescopes and videotapes made prior to 1970 were dumped into the ocean by a garbage scow off the coast of New York City.

This appearance of JL on the Tonight Show makes me appreciate JC more. He is not so funny without the movie tricks. I think in this of stand up type environment Dean Martin would have been funnier and more entertaining. A young Nancy Dussault seemed to be similar to Florence Henderson. I guess why they were both associated with the theater version of The Sound of Music with Miss Mary Martin. Also I would think that both Doc Severson and Tommy Newsom were in back shadows of the band since Sketch Henderson returned and Jose Melis had left. Johnny Carson taking over The Tonight Show was not the slam dunk everyone thinks now . There could have been a slow death this show with a succession of hosts after Jack Parr. doc
