I applaud Mr. Lewis and his efforts on behalf of the MDA. My nephew was diagnosed at an early age. Doctors told us that he was unlikely to see his 15th birthday. He lived a much better life, thanks to the MDA and the money Jerry Lewis helped raise.

This was such a momentous part of my childhood, it’s difficult to describe. It was the one night of the year I was allowed to stay up as late as I wanted. It was probably only 1am when I nodded off in front of the television set (why was it called a “set” anyway?), and Dad carried me upstairs. The end of summer, the beginning of a new school year… a time when fear was a pop quiz, a test would “cover all the material you’ve learned thus far”, and does Michelle know I have a crush on her? “What does the final total say? JohnathanK Doe Then with that mindset, there’s no money in “curing” “climate change.” Why “cure” racism? This systemic racism frenzy has legs now. Is medicine to be compared to political power grabs? I don’t think so. The complexity of cancer means that people will get sick from it, but therapeutics such as biologicals and immunologicals are saving lives. And when they really get better, the fear of cancer will dwindle. The pharmaceutical company who makes that major breakthrough will see billions for their shareholders and profits. Examine your cynicism. Be well.

These days it would never work. Back in the day the Jerry Telethon worked because there was merely 3 to 4 TV stations in total. All of them would regularly go off the air around midnight normally. They would run his show for 24 hours. On a holiday weekend, people would stay up late just to watch Jerry supposedly get more tired and more wacky. He had a sort of captive audience for a good cause and it was a variety show that was great entertainment. There are so many telethons now, people are bored with them and they have limitless TV 24/7 and internet. I recall, it seems around the end of the 60's when Jerry's goal was a million dollars. He got that and a little more. From there it just seemed to swell to Billions.

We watched the Telethon on Labor Day for many years. Our local station would carry the main event and the local studio had there own fund raising effort. Then, the local station stopped carrying the Telethon and no local support. And, to be honest, Lewis got old. Not only in years, but with this schtick. The MDA made a decision, right or wrong, to move Lewis out and go another way. I hope they parted amicably with the MDA offering humble appreciation for all the financial support Lewis generated. Because if the privacy of a trust fund, we will probably never know whether Jerry Lewis left inheritance to his kids simply because a trust is NOT a public document. Just understand that the personality you saw on television isn’t a genuine depiction of who that person is in real life. There are many negative stories from people who had to work with, or for him. You can find a few here in the comments. I saw a video of an interview that he had agreed to, but for some reason, he took a dislike toward the interviewer, and it was painfully embarrassing to watch. And it was Jerry Lewis who embarrassed himself, answering questions with monosyllabic, one word answers, “Yes”, “No” “Next” - he sounded like a petulant child, and you could hear the anger and hostility in his voice and body language. It was extremely unprofessional behavior, and there was no legitimate excuse for it. And that was ON CAMERA, where the people in show business know it will be seen. Imagine what that would be like if it were off camera. Actors obviously know how to act, and usually, they act their best when on camera. That’s no mystery, most humans want to present their best selves. I saw a different interview he gave where he was charming and engaging. I guess people never knew what it was that could cause him to change like that. But apparently many people who knew him “off stage” have related similar stories. It’s not all coming from a single person, which lends some credence. I can only speculate, but as one commenter mentioned, when this telethon began, there were very few options for people to choose from, other than three networks. So it had a much wider audience than a comparable audience today. And other organizations have borrowed from this idea as a way of raising funds. In my area, the Boston Red Sox raise a lot of money for The Jimmy Fund, which benefits research and treatment into childhood cancer. That’s been a local charity for years, and as now all games are televised, one day is set aside during the baseball season to directly appeal to the fans for donations. The “entertainment” was, naturally, a baseball game that would be played anyway. So there’s not a lot of extra cost involved. But with all that Jerry Lewis did, and he did a lot, I don’t think anyone questions that, but there is considerable overhead in that kind of telethon. Jerry Lewis was wealthy enough to donate his time, and most celebrities could donate their time. But musicians, stagehands, light and sound people, television crews do need to get paid. They usually cannot afford to donate their time, and many probably worked for less than they usually did. Then there is the fact that variety shows just aren’t as popular in general than they once were. They used to be a staple of broadcast television, but they have all but disappeared. Audience tastes have changed. So with diminished audiences, the donations aren’t as big, yet overhead costs still rise, and the MDA is now just one of many causes looking for money. That was likely the source of this dispute, and “ousting”. Perhaps Jerry just didn’t want to understand the changing realities, and the MDA decided it was time to move in a different direction, and develop other means of fundraising. The only television personality I can think of who was exactly the same on camera and off camera was Fred Rogers. Many people who knew him attested to that. He wasn’t acting.
