Had their album as a kid and wore that thing out it was SO amazing to listen to. Such great talent, hope those harmonicas are in a museum, they should be. Never knew they made harmonicas like that super long one before seeing these guys. As an old flutist I understand how much they had to control breathing and condition themselves to do this thing, so RESPECT!

To all you wrote, I reply 'Indeed!' Jerry played chromatic, Don played bass, and Al played the 24" long chord harmonica. Plus, you are right. Those 'harps' belong in a museum. As Dick Gardner "the Last Hamonicat" would say, "Happiness is warm harmonica." Great posting. Thank you.

The first famous harmonica group was Borrah Minevitch and The Harmonica Rascals. In that group was Jerry Murad, who went on to form his own group the Harmonicats. Also in that first group was there was Johnny Puleo, a midget involved in a lot of comedy bits. After Minevitch he also formed his own group, The Harmonica Gang, which kept the comedy angle along with fine musicianship. That's Patti Page who introduces the group as host of her own show.

I remember my dad (the Lead) telling me that my uncle the cord player in the Golden Harps (1970+), (a Harmonicats type group), could do the cords just as well another way in the song Peg O' My Heart, but they did it they way he did in the beginning of the song because it look good. :) Thanks for the upload. 2018-11

VerifyVeracity It’s very cool that your family had their own group! Yep, there’s another way to play the solo in this key that would have the long jumps only be about 1 foot long. Definitely effects some of the wow factor. Haha!

Absolutely remarkable. Impressive then, impressive now. I had a chromatic Hohner when I was a kid, but I was marginal on it at best. I always wanted to play one of those chord monsters.... *By the way, Patti Page, in addition to being beautiful, was also a technology pioneer, being one of the first to overdub her own voice and have amazing hit records. Of course, props go to Les Paul and Mary Ford.)

wrigleyville2016 Al Fiore was the original chord player for the Jerry Murad’s Harmonicats. Maybe he was sick which is why Bob filled in for him. Don Les was the first of the original line up to leave the trio.

Don Les was your uncle? How cool! I met Don in Dec 1968. His real last name is (please pardon my spelling) Lescynski. "Boing Boing!" At age 10, he and the other Cats signed my Harmonica Rhapsody LP, each with their full names. In addition to Don was Jerry Muradian and Al Fiorentino. AKA: Jerry Murad, Don Les and Al Fiore. BTW: It was at my house where I met the Cats. My Dad played with them 2-3 times. A joy to read your note. Thank you for posting.

My dad knew Don too. Knew all three from the old neighborhood. Saw them at Pheasant Run twice. When they were selling their album in the lobby (double LP) after the show, my dad asked Al how much they were. Al told my dad $10.00. All my dad had was a $20. Al told my dad, "piss on it, just take it". As classy as they were talented! Never be another trio like them again. NEVER! To all the relatives of these genius musicians, best wishes and many blessings!
